"Now I can say I was provoked! :getin:" is such perfect Master bullshit too. The way Jacobi switches from kindly old Professor Yana to sneering, contemptuous Master is executed so well.

Kill the Moon and Forest are in a different category for me because they’re definitely bad but you can kinda see what they were trying to accomplish.

LotTL is like if someone purposely chose the dumbest possible solutions to every single plot beat in their script, but tried to hold them up as celebratory and genuinely inspiring. You spend the entire episode just aggressively rolling your eyes at every single moment and line of dialogue until they give up and fall into the back of your head.

And, to make matters worse, the only slightly redeeming part of the episode (SimmMaster gleefully dancing around and taunting Tennant to “I Can’t Decide”) has been cut out of the available streaming version, presumably due to rights issues.

I believe this scene's been cut from some broadcasts for longer than it would've been a rights issue. I think the general guess for a while, at least, was that the shot of the Doctor being treated like a dog might've been a bit too much.

Between that and the ending of the episode, I found myself wondering if this was all just Rusty's subconscious telling the world that he really wishes he could gently caress Jesus.

Though on the bright side, it does open up the question of which three Doctors the various Masters would choose for gently caress/Marry/Kill.

Pretty sure all the Masters would just respond about all the Doctors: "Kill, Kill, Kill."

I thought it was more that LOTTL was longer than average and needed editing to fit the 45 minute slot - while one of the good bits of the episode, it is something which can be removed for time without affecting the episode.

Seems like a Top Gear style situation where shows that air on BBC can go crazy with music-use and then get butchered when they are shown elsewhere.

Online talk, 'Doctor Who and the Communist: the writing and politics of Malcolm Hulke'
Date: 10th Jun 2020

Event time: 14:00 to 15:00

We will be livestreaming this talk, with login details available on this page on the day.

Malcolm Hulke (1924-1979) was a successful writer for radio, television and the cinema from the 1950s to the 1970s. His work included episodes for Armchair Theatre, Danger Man, and The Avengers as well as eight serials for Doctor Who between 1967 and 1974, including "The Faceless Ones", "The War Games" and "The Sea Devils".

Malcolm was a socialist, belonging for twenty years to the Communist Party of Great Britain, and his political views fed into his work. He once said: "It’s a very political show. Remember what politics refers to, it refers to relationships between groups of people. It doesn’t necessarily mean left or right...so all Doctor Whos are political, even though the other group of people are reptiles, they’re still a group of people."

Our speaker Michael Herbert has been connected with the Working Class Movement Library for 40 years, having been inspired by Library founders Ruth and Edmund Frow to begin to research and write about radical history. His published work includes Never counted out, a biography of the black Manchester boxer and Communist Len Johnson; "For the sake of the women who are to come after": Manchester's radical women 1914-1945, and Doctor Who and the Communist: Malcolm Hulke and his career in television, published by Five Leaves Press in 2015. He blogs on radical history at Red Flag Walks and on science fiction at Fantasies of Possibility.

The talk is part of the Invisible Histories series. Admission free; light refreshments afterwards as long as you boil your own kettle...

He's one of the more interesting writers from the third doctor era, I reckon, and, after Robert Holmes, definitely the most influential. He pretty much defined NA continuity with Colony in Space and Frontier in Space. Cool dude.

Yeah, the BBC has some extremely old and generous arrangements over using licensed music that can cause issues with airing shows internationally. I'm not sure if that specifically applies to Last of the Time Lords, but wouldn't be surprised.

Hell, I think there are still rights issues in some markets with showing The Chase due to the clip of the Beatles in the first episode.

I remember hearing that a big reason it took so long for QI to get international airplay (it even took years to air in Australia, and Australia loves importing British comedy) was actually rights issues with the images they project onto the back screens. I'm not sure if that's true, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I've got a week of holiday at the moment that's been ruined by lockdown, so I've been using the time to take the plunge on going through telesnap reconstructions of the missing episodes. I'd expected to find them a huge struggle to watch, but it turns out I've actually got a surprisingly high tolerance for them. Admittedly I've been very selective in which ones I've watched so far and there are still several ones left that I'm wary about.

I 'watched' The Highlanders yesterday expecting it to be a real slog. I had no idea that it's actually four straight episodes of the Doctor clowning on everyone, with occasional breaks for Ben and Polly to go clown on people instead. The only big trouble I had was the fight sequence in ep 4 that's just alternating static images of Jamie and the slaver guy over sounds of swords clanking. It felt like that part went on forever.

There are definitely rough parts to even the best telesnaps and I wouldn't judge anyone for not getting on with them, but I would recommend for people to at least give one a go to see how you feel.
