3K did insanely well in China, which I suspect is either on par with the US now or ahead of the US as the largest single PC games market (I think it still comes out behind “English speaking” as a whole). It’s the first western game I’ve seen to do Chinese localisation well, so they earned it.

Also got to have that asymmetry in early -- imagine if the bandit subculture that accompanied A World Betrayed had been in at launch, alongside the Han Chinese and Yellow Turban subcultures.

In CA's defense they have tried to make fun made up units and/or anachronistic units, and all it usually gets them is poo poo thrown at them from all sides for not being "historically accurate", they get around this with 3K because they're following the book and not history. To be honest I don't blame them, some of the chuds over at TwC would probably storm their offices if they made to many "inaccurate" changes to a game. gently caress they get poo poo for WH2 for not being loreful enough sometimes.
Ironically there's several historical units that they could have incorporated but almost none of them are in the novel, so the game's closer to the history in namedropping two of them at all even if their depictions/gameplay roles are ahistorical (Tiger & Leopard Cavalry as a combined name instead of separate units, Camp Crushers as greatsword infantry), as are most of the remaining faction-specific units and all of the Dragon and Imperial units.

Speaking of the Turbs, playing as He Yi is a different and refreshing experience. I dig the glass cannon peasant army and unique tech tree. I thought I was boned when Cao Cao came storming in after I took the southwest Han territory, but I managed to set up a successful ambush at the Runan-Yangzhou crossing. Lol get hosed Cao Cao, this is our neighborhood now.

Yeah I've been playing a He Yi campaign and it's incredibly fun. Some of their units slap hard.

Wish there was some more diplomacy options with Zhang Yan or the other Turban factions though!

Wow, Zheng Jiang's economy really does become ridiculous once you get a few tributaries under your belt, I'm making 200k a turn at this point.

It's also a lot of fun to embrace her 194 start position, take no initial territory other than the Pengcheng temple and spend the first 60+ turns fighting as a one stack mercenary army. Ended up migrating to Taiwan with my immense stores of mercenary gold, formed the Great Bandit Army, and sailed out to conquer the south-west. Now the lands south of the Yangtze flourish, barely a walled city exists within the central plains and all the gold in China flows south in a vain attempt to stop me sailing out and sacking the north into the ground.

Realised last night that Liu Bei's Yi ranged units can fire on the move - it's pretty brutal to use. I like his cheap militia trait too - let me run two full stacks right near the start of the game which is great.

The one time I played He Yi I just abandoned my starting location and booked it to Taiwan, because I am a craven coward. But it worked out really well. Since then I greatly enjoyed playing two of the Zhang brothers (Zhang Bao, I think it is, instantly crashes every time I start a new campaign), and I've gotten better playing as the turbans, so I may try He Yi again and stick it out.

I think i just got lucky that a few things fell my way. The decisive ambush against Cao Cao killed him and made them sue for peace, so I ended up with some land and an angry but subdued neighbor. I just try not get greedy and overextend. The only faction I've totally wiped out is Yan Baihu because he's a poo poo. I'm currently considering doing the same to Yuan Shu before he coalitions everyone around me.

Everyone around me has stepped up at least once but never all at once, so again probably just luck

Some new artwork has popped up on the TW forums:

Left to right it's: Agamemnon (???), Odysseus (Archer), Menelaus (???), Achilles (Fighter) -> Hector (Defender), Sarpedon (???), Paris (Archer), Aeneas (???).

The four classes are fighter, defender, archer and warlord. So I'm guessing Agamemnon and Aeneas are warlords, Menelaus is a defender and Sarpedon is a fighter.

God Yuan Shao is such a loving rear end in a top hat. Dude is down to literally two provinces just south of the Yellow River and has been for the past ten years, but somehow the Duchy of Yan and Liu Zhang, with a dozen provinces each, are still completely and utterly loyal to him and unleash hordes whenever he decides someone looks at him funny. What's more, I'm pretty convinced that he literally seeks out and forms coalitions with whoever I, specifically, am at war with so they can call him in as an ally even though I bought him off with a nonaggression pact.

It's actually a good book, if you approach it like Gilgamesh or some other ancient text. It's not a story. It's a recount of various mythologized fights. I don't even think the Paris stuff is in the Iliad, although it's been a minute since I looked at it. It's basically just a series of descriptive duels, interspersed with Greek mythology in the sense of the gods arguing about who deserves to win the battles.

Yeah there's a lot that's not in The Iliad, because Homer had composed it as part of a much longer cycle of epic poems, and most of those were lost in the ensuing centuries. So there's no Trojan horse, there's no Paris fatally wounding Achilles in the heel, there's no fall of Troy, etc. We get allusions to that stuff in The Odyssey, but that's really it.

From what I understand, part of the reason why there's so much repetition in Homer was so that the mostly-illiterate troubadours who were reciting these absurdly long pieces could easily memorize them. That's why you get those weird, long refrains about funerary sacrifices over and over again, making "an odor pleasing to the nostrils of Zeus," for example.

The one I hate the most, oddly enough, is Liu Zhang. Dude's supposed to be a pacifist/appeaser, yet in every campaign I play, he's a belligerent little fucker. And I tend to play factions on the other side of the map from him - yet almost every game, there's a moment where he declares war on me and then just doesn't send in troops or anything.
