It seems really interesting.

It's basically about creating a story and using the mechanics of the game to support that story, so if you're playing by yourself you're basically just writing your own fiction where the results being positive/negative are outside your control.

I'm really eager to play it with somebody else and try to create a story together.

I think you could translate a solo game into an LP pretty effectively if you wanted to pace each update to end with some big narrative decision and then task the thread with coming up with the next move, then playing a bit more of the campaign out on your own before you reach the next big decision. Though that would largely hang on the writing ability of the OP because, again, you're basically just writing your own story with some light mechanics.

Yep. I've been enchanted with the idea of a system that does the heavy lifting of storytelling for me, since I'm not much of a storyteller, but hoo boy do I not have time to do that at the moment.

Just spent about half an hour playing Gutwhale and I am awful at it, but it's really neat. It kind of reminds me of Downwell (mostly due to the way the levels progress) and Spelunky and it's hard as balls. You're going through the guts of a whale for some reason, and you've got one bullet that you can shoot at a time (to start off with at least) to fend off the monsters on each floor. When you kill something, the bullet ricochets off its body and if you catch it before it hits the floor you can get a combo of points going that you can spend on upgrades. I'm going to blame how bad I am at it on my old Xbox 360 controller that seems to finally be dying after like eleven years of use, but I think it's also just loving difficult. It's well worth checking out, though.

No More Kings is a chess based puzzle game. The rules:

- Kill the king
- Before the king is killed, every other piece must be killed
- You start as the red piece. You must eat a piece every move.
- When you eat a piece, you become that piece and it turns red. Now that piece needs to kill another piece with a move.
- So on and so forth until you Kill the King.

Arcade Spirits is an alternate reality visual novel where arcades thrived instead of dying off. You make a character (pronoun, hair, clothes colours of choice) who starts a new job at the arcade, where you meet characters, juggling your responses (stats) with the people you meet (relationship values). I finished a run in a few hours, it's pretty light and easy playing, especially if you keep it running and clicking buttons here and there as you do the work you're supposed to be doingshhhhhhhhhhhhhh

New Ice York is a super weird adventure game.

Super dope soundtrack. About an hour and a half of total playtime I think. Worth it if you want to experience something bizarre. Downside is that the ending kind of comes out of nowhere and is just as weird as the rest of the game.

Chipmonk is literally Golden Axe but with chipmunks. Weird art but pretty playable. The only thing is that Golden Axe is not the best brawler series to emulate, but w/e. It has the same special attack system from Golden Axe 2 where how many "mushrooms" you have determines the power of the special attack. And like most Golden Axes, there's a part in the stage where special "item drop" enemies zoom around. Thumbs up

Fossil Hunters seems like a cute chill game to play with a friend or while listening to a podcast. You run around a small dungeon floor mining/digging away the dirt/rocks to reveal fossils which you then drag around and stitch together with other fossils. There are side objectives asking to create unique skeletons with five spines or a double-head dinosaur, which reminds me a lot of the famous Bone Wars of history between Othniel Marsh and Edward Cope when they were just slapping bones together higgledypiggledy and hipfiring their descriptions out to get famous. Thumbs up

Cecconoid is a 1-bit twin stick game, the kind I'm a sucker for. The only problem is that it's crazy hard, your pea shooter projectile is one pixel in size, and there are no continues. Thumbs down until I get good. I don't have the patience for that with so many other games to play.

Resistance is Fruitile is a cute twin-stick shooter where sentient fruit have stolen your wedding cake and you have to get it back. It's a slower-paced shooter in the vein of Smash TV, and you can play either the bride or groom. i played as the bride who had a shotgun. upon levelling up you choose a card from a concentration board which gives you a passive perk. matching cards boosts the perk further. it's not a special game, it's just nice. a C+ game i'd say. a thumb up

Retromancer is another twin-stick shooter, this one along the lines of Robotron 2084, with a presentation of like a neon-infused Atari 5200 game. This is another C+ one, so it's a thumb up, but it's not going to unseat Nuclear Throne or anything (which is also in the bundle).

Zone of Lacryma is definitely a cut above the other shmups I've played in the bundle to date. I still wouldn't call it a grade A shmup, but it's very interesting. In order to both replenish your ammo and recharge your shield, you need to be using the turbo button to go faster through the level. Also, how powerful your shot is depends on how large your combo meter is. And because it's a modern indie game, there's XP and upgrade points to improve your ship's capabilities. Thumbs up, though I still haven't hit upon a top tier shmup in this bundle yet.

And All Will Cry Beware is a retro-FPS in a surreal open world. This is the kind of game I'd never buy myself but am glad I played it as a part of a bundle. It actually is pretty clunky and awkward, but charming at the same time. Still a C+ thumb up rather than an enthusiastic review.

Factory Hiro is a stressful conveyor belt management game where you have to package things the correct way and send them on to a delivery truck, and throw away the mistakes, by rotating arrows that direct the items where to go. This kind of puzzle game is too stressful for me but it seems like a solid game, and the cutscene art/font is by KC Green (Back, Gunshow).

Total # of Games in Bundle: 1059. Games I'm Not Interested In: 122. Games Played and Still Interested: 87/937 (9.3%). Games Beaten: 62/87

e: I've gone through all of the pages and adjusted the game total #, and put 'not interested' on any multiplayer-focused game or game i've already played and given a thumbs down to. also i haven't beaten 62 games THIS WEEK, there obviously are games in the bundle i've already beaten from months/years ago.

Games I Will Finish: A Hole New World, Fossil Hunters, Resistance is Fruitile, Soft Body, possibly Retromancer, Golf Peaks, My Rabbits Are Gone, Puzzle Puppers, And All Will Cry Beware, Ephemeral Tale, Zone of Lacryma, Mewnbase

Trying to play at least a few of these games. Got linked to here and to a database sorting tool from the SHMUP thread.

Xenogunner - The only two mouse-aiming platformers I've liked so far are Abuse and Noitu Love 2. Pretty game, played for an hour or less, never gonna touch it ever again though.

Risk System - four levels in of six if the UI isn't hiding more stages. Weird gimmick and the very slow horizontal move speed bothers me, but I do want to finish it once. They weren't kidding about screen flash/flicker in the warning.

Dogs Throwing Swords II - Casual romp for a few minutes with cute dog sprites and a customizable dog patterns where you choose any three of the four types, duplicates allowed.

Dungeons and Lesbians - Looked like a funny and lecherous VN. Instead it wasn't funny nor lecherous, and was just a dull meme sandwich. Finished one story path in ~20 minutes for a date at a local game store. Deleting it in a few minutes.

Hellstar Squadron - Boring SHMUP with too much text, slow bullets, weirdly and drawn faces. Should have quit after the first level.

Puzzle Puppers is simple but charming. I blazed through the first 30 levels pretty quickly-- 30 itself is a bit of a difficulty spike, and it drops down again afterward. I think I'm up to level 38 or so?
Go Morse Go! is delightful and creative but I do wish it kind of expanded upon its concept a bit more. It feels like a demo.
Hot Pot Panic makes me very happy that my girlfriend and I both have ADHD and definitely understand if the other person gets distracted occasionally, especially when there's food involved. If a date is as stressful as this game makes one feel, that person probably ain't for you.

Like the JRPG part has a segment where an ethereal Twitch chat pops up every now and then showing an audience reacting to the game and giving some flavor about the fictional game developer, eventually actually becoming a gameplay mechanic as a poster keeps "spoiling" puzzle solutions for you and warning about glitches and balance issues despite frequent warnings about getting banned because it's a spoiler-free chat.

Democratic Socialism Simulator: Molleindustria has done it again, folks. In Democratic Socialism Simulator, you have just been elected president of the United States! Congratulations. Of course, as the first Democratic Socialist President, you have a lot of work to get done. Through a series of amusing-but-difficult choices, it’s your job to try and effect change. What will the New Pork Times have to say about your new policies? Will Fox News (run by real, actual foxes) bring your presidency to its knees?????

I had a lot of fun with Democratic Socialism Simulator. It’s put together in a super clean package, using a lot of the same core mechanics as Reigns. Swipe left, swipe right, and try not to fall into a deficit. Sometimes I feel like I can get so in my own head about politics and the State Of The World At Large, and so it can be a breath of fresh air to have a lizard and a peacock in my presidential cabinet telling me what to do.

Mendel: It took me far too long to realise that Mendel is called Mendel because it’s basically a game about Punnett squares. Thus, I can only assume that this is a game where you play first-person as the Moravian Augustinian monk, Gregor Mendel, in space as he collects and hybridises the local alien flora. I kid, but the heart of the joke stands.

Mendel is a delightfully colourful, minimalist, and procedurally-generated sandbox game where the goal (if there is one) is to combine cool-looking plants (that you can name!!!) together into other cool-looking plants with Mendelian inheritance. It’s extremely chill, and reminds me of all the fun parts of No Man’s Sky without any of the pressure. You grow your strange little garden, you watch the buds blossom and trees reach skyward while a synth harp plinks away.

A New Life: I’ve played a number of Angela He’s games (and a lot of them are free!), which always manage to make me feel some type of way. Her illustrations are stunning, but her ability to strike an emotional resonance with small animations and particle effects tip it all over into pure artistry. She’s never been one to shy away from difficult topics in her games, with some featuring stories about intimate partner violence, self-harm, or suicidal ideation. I’ve written about my own conflicted feelings about how these topics get tackled here (and so has Jay!), if it interests.

A New Life tells the stories of two women who meet in college, fall in love, get married, and grow old together. Sometimes. Sometimes they don’t, sometimes there’s a global morbigavirus, and sometimes old age just catches up with you too soon. A New Life is a game about choices to varying degrees, and sometimes I find that games about choice take themselves too seriously. That’s not the case with A New Life — it has just enough humour and just enough care and I’ve got just enough of a soft spot for stories about lesbians in tech to not really mind any overt lessons in choice. That, and sometimes I really wish I could undo the morbigavirus.

The Floor is Jelly: Sometimes it’s good just to bounce around.

Odd Realm: Really solid city builder village management thing. But it is way too easy and there isn't really anything to do in it. Probably play in a year or two.

Let's talk about where you're going.
Sagebrush isn't bad. It nails the creepy feeling that walking around a disused cult compound at dusk would give. The graphics are very low-fi which adds to the spoopy atmosphere. The puzzles are basically "find key or code/unlock door to next set-piece", but the game is more about the narrative than the gameplay, so that's fine. The main issue I had with it is that the female narrator's VA is perfectly fine and even somewhat believable, but the VA for the cult leader is just terrible. I'm fairly certain it's the game's author doing it, but...well a cult leader should be charismatic and have a strong voice with a powerful delivery. It should reek of self-confidence. The dev sounds like a 25 year-old kid playing youth minister. It also sounds like he's recording at night and doesn't want to wake the house up, so he's keeping his voice very quiet.

It really took me out of the game, unfortunately. Still, worth a gander - it only takes 1 to 1.5 hours.

Almost everything I've played has been mentioned in the thread already, but I do have one thing to add:

The Sword and the Slime

Short, somewhat puzzle somewhat platformer game. You control a floating sword with the mouse and have a slime following you. Your goal is generally to get both of you to the exit of each level.

The visual style is sharp and pretty well-done, with some charming details in the animations and mechanics. The gameplay is unique and quite interesting, but can be frustrating; it sometimes feels like you're platforming with the slime using mouse controls on a two-second delay - which is exactly as fun as it sounds - and while the restart is fast it's not fast enough. I'd still say the game is worth the time to try out, though.

Going to put a solid rec (or second?) in for Witchway, a cute and really well-designed puzzle-platformer.

It's one of those games that has one core mechanic -- shoot magic orbs at blocks to gain the ability to move and manipulate them -- and explores it thoroughly, with 26 rooms that each has a different variation on one of three core themes. The main path is pretty smooth sailing, but for as short as the game is it's packed with optional (and sometimes secret!) objectives, which can easily double the playtime and which push the difficulty up nicely, though never so hard that it gave me trouble for more than a minute or two.

It's charming, elegant and short. Worth playing!

Scrapper - I'm kind of torn on this one. Nice presentation for a 'navigate a messy space at speed' spaceship game. Good number of mission types, the unlocks are just slight variations on ship components. Feels too 'constant attention' especially since there's no reason not to just go straight - more arena is generated ahead of wherever you fly. There aren't any jump scares in the game, there is a recurring character that is introduced in the second level or so that is incredibly obviously the spooky malevolent figure that knows more than they're letting on but it's not really a scary game. I think tonally the darkest it gets is more akin to something like The Beginner's Guide than an actual horror game.
