Honest question: How many different post-apocalypic/wrecked up Tokyos have there been in this franchise?

Just in terms of mainline SMT, I believe we're at five: One in SMT1 (shared with 2 and Imagine), one in Nocturne, and three in SMTIV.

Widen the net, though, and we start getting weird and have to set down ground rules and make judgement calls. Does Strange Journey count, given that Tokyo was destroyed but we weren't there for it? Does Persona 5's brief foray into Metaverse-Tokyo count?

Smt4's neutral Tokyo is arguably doing okay enough that it's not post-apocalypse. Like yeah there are monsters running around but they have a society still going on pretty strongly

they all live in cloistered underground abbeys centers around malls and subway stations, which is a significant amount of real estate in Tokyo but that still sounds hellish.

yeah but like, they've still got a semi-government structure with the hunters and some infrastucture since all the power still works

i think i'd argue they are still in the beginning stages of their apocalypse rather then after it

dx2 shows you an alternate apocalypse several times. I'm not sure if each time you prevent them if it's a different one, or what. at least one is real enough to bring a character across worlds to the main one, though.

Yeah, in SMT IV after you return from the expanse(and pretty much all of SMTIV: Apocalypse), you start hearing from/they start showing you how things are still lovely but also sorta on the up-and-up.

Do the Devil Survivor games count since its only partial destruction?

I can't speak on Devil Survivor, because I didn't play them, but I count SMTIV's 'main' setting as post-apocalypse because... well, the apocalypse still very clearly happened. You are in a world that is very clearly defined by its relationship to the fact the world got blown the gently caress up. How well they crawled out of that doesn't really matter, it's still very clearly post-apocalyptic.

As decent comparison points, I'd put forward Nier: Automata and Breath of the Wild, because they're both far closer to the grey area than SMTIV. Both of them undeniably faced some form of armageddon; they're both clearly 'post-post-apocalypse' if that's a thing, but their relationship to said apocalypses vary. Nier's been going for centuries after the 'apocalypse', but everything is still very clearly defined by its events. Meanwhile, there's parts of BotW that you can argue actually aren't 'post-apocalyptic', because it isn't really concerning itself about what happened, and no part of that area's story relates to it (I'm thinking stuff like the Koroks).

I played P4G for the first time start of 2017 and I managed to avoid being spoiled on the killer. Everyone was very considerate about it, even before I actively started posting people usually avoided saying the killer's name.

All the memes made me think it was Nanako, actually.

I mean, not Nanako herself, but like, she was possessed or something. She's always in front of the damned TV after all...

It has been 12 years since I played P4 and I forgot how much they rolled with that yellow tint. Also, on my first play through I kept on thinking the murderer was Yosuke. I knew the murderer had to be someone they introduced early on and I was also thinking they were going to pull a fast one and be someone that was close to you too. I guess I was not that far off.

Anyways I really hope these Persona 4 Golden on steam/switch/ps4 rumors are true because it has been so long since I played. I just hope they add the feature to save anywhere and it would be perfect.

I really like that unlike most games, the big reveal of the Culprit isn't automatic. Like it's telegraphed, especially if you already know who it is but i just like that you, the player, have to scroll to the answer and pick it. Its a cool feature.

You make my korokoro go dokidoki.
The real nail in the coffin is when you notice their name next to the OTHER person who happens to fit all the criteria.

I didn't really think too hard about the killer's identity until I hit that exact screen.

Same. Once you have a list of names, it really puts all the pieces together for you. I wouldn't have had a clue without it.

Of course the real trick is the "true" ending and the true culprit. I was so scared about missing that I just looked up what to do.

The day on which you fight the final boss of vanilla P5 is literally called the day of reckoning in the UI. Also, I remember the mood getting really apocalyptic during the final month of P3. The difference compared to SMT is that you always stop the apocalypse before it happens while SMT games take place during or after it.

I'd call the actual finale of vanilla P5 as taking place in 'a wrecked-up Tokyo', it's just that it happens to not stick.

Of course, no Personas before 5 can actually count in this listing, since all of them are set in fictional locations--none of which are even based off of Tokyo, either (just as an FYI, Persona 2's games are in knock-off Yokohama, 3 in knock-off Kobe, and 4 in a place based on several different small Japanese towns; I don't know about P1).

P1 is set in the good ol' USA, be sure to visit our neighborhood Shinto shrine and don't mind the Japanese song that plays all the time at the local corner drugstore.

Screw that and go for broke: In Persona 6, give every starting member of your party their own Jack as a mascot.

Whoever is the ice-focused party member gets Frosty. The fire-focused gets Pyro. The wind specialist gets Jack the Ripper. The MC gets either Hairy Jack or Heeho-kun. There. No more issues and everyone's happy.
