Meat Miracle posted:Not having read the study at all I suspect the lower levels measured from cotton (and cardboard, etc) are at least partly due to porous natural fibres being a bit difficult to efficiently extract nucleic acids from compared to the other materials. Cotton in particular is great at capturing nucleic acids (hence its frequent use for collection swabs) but tends to be reluctant to release them into solution (which is why swabs used for some high sensitivity testing have moved to specialised synthetic materials). Isn't grabbing all the particles and never letting them go exactly what you want in your PPE tho? You don't want virions trapped in your mask working their way free under the pressure of your breath going back and forth through the fabric. No, you want those suckers stuck fast until you come in for the kill with soap and water. It doesn't matter how many virions are still viable if they can't escape the cotton.

AceOfFlames posted:To add to this, I'm sorry if this makes me look like a naive idiot, but it just boggles me how people have previously been so wrong or OUTRIGHT LIED about the masks. My problem with this is who the gently caress are we supposed to trust? I don't want to be one of those people who "follows their gut". My gut is non-existent. Authority is the only reference I have. Multiple sources are how I determine what is real. How the gently caress does anyone deal with this? How do you know what is real if you have multiple contradictory sources of information and everyone has an agenda? How do you LIVE? Going to war on false pretense is one thing but manipulating science? How do you stop yourself from turning into an equivalent of a flat earther? In official statements most health authorities used the weasel words "no evidence". "No evidence it prevents transmission" because of course there had been no studies specifically about masks and covid yet. I'm calling it weasel words because they would often go onto say things about how their gut says it could even be bad because people fiddle with their masks, not bothering to mention there's no evidence for that hypothesis either. As for who to trust, look up which places have had good results. See what their health authorities said and did to get those good results. Still not perfect though, like Russia was posting great number for a long while just by lieing and occasionally defenestrating doctors, but you definitely should not try to cure covid by pushing doctors out windows. There is no evidence that sacrifices to the god of window glazing cures disease.

so apparently the way the my province counts covid cases is changing, and this conveniently translates into lower Number, and that lower number has been, since day one, what we used as a benchmark to open er up i got a message from my boss today that basically said it's a 50-50 if i get called back in the first phase of employee reinstatements on one hand AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH but on the other hand CERB is gonna run out soon and if i don't want to sleep in a tent i don't have much of a choice
