The experience over the years
of nothing getting better
only worse.
when papa marx ethered henry george

quote:

All these “socialists” since Colins have this much in common that they leave wage labour and therefore capitalist production in existence and try to bamboozle themselves or the world into believing that if ground rent were transformed into a state tax all the evils of capitalist production would disappear of themselves. The whole thing is therefore simply an attempt, decked out with socialism, to save capitalist domination and indeed to establish it afresh on an even wider basis than its present one.

This cloven hoof (at the same time rear end’s hoof) is also unmistakably revealed in the declamations of Henry George. And it is the more unpardonable in him because he ought to have put the question to himself in just the opposite way: How did it happen that in the United States, where, relatively, that is in comparison with civilised Europe, the land was accessible to the great mass of the people and to a certain degree (again relatively) still is, capitalist economy and the corresponding enslavement of the working class have developed more rapidly and shamelessly than in any other country!

On the other hand George’s book, like the sensation it has made with you, is significant because it is a first, if unsuccessful, attempt at emancipation from the orthodox political economy.

H. George does not seem, for the rest, to know anything about the history of the early American anti-renters, who were rather practical men than theoretical. Otherwise he is a talented writer (with a talent for Yankee advertisement too) as his article on California in the Atlantic proves, for instance. He also has the repulsive presumption and arrogance which is displayed by all panacea-mongers without exception.

When this was happening I saw a news report where they filmed people getting gas in the area. People would have one hand on the nozzle and with the rest of their body would just be randomly juking and ducking. It was hilarious and I've never been able to find it. I can only presume the cameraman was doing the same.

not really a weird setup. 3 out of 5 sedans I've ever owned could have the back seat lay down so you can put things larger than the dimensions of the trunk alone in the combined space. most of em had some way to open and/or close the trunk from inside the trunk too. that's part of what was so scary about those guys, there's really nothing stopping copycats cuz their methodology only really required some admittedly specific but overall pretty standard car features.

i worked at a gas station during the dc sniper stuff right in the area he was shooting people

i had to pump people's gas constantly and they wouldn't even tip me

also the person that owned the place gave no fucks about putting up a tarp or anything

but the funny thing is the career arc of chief moose after that because he was in a massive rush to cash in on it

The DC snipers' car was an older (boxy) B-body which didn't have trunk passthroughs. Additionally it was an old cop car so it was already partially gutted when they got it.

Now that SUVs are more popular than cars you'd think it'd be a lot easier to do

Well they'd cut a notch just above the license plate, I'd imagine in a modern low-load floor trunk you'd have to cut a hole in the part of the trunk lid that's vertical when closed. I mean, you have to cut a hole somewhere regardless.

The only modern cars that have rear-facing walls in the trunk like the snipers' car I can think of are convertibles like the Miata or GM's K-body.

And they're also the only state to still differentiate marital rape if i recall correctly

quote:

With the removal, in 2005, of the requirement of a higher level of violence from the law of Tennessee, which now allows for marital rape in Tennessee to be treated like any other type of rape, South Carolina remains the only US state with a law requiring excessive force/violence (the force or violence used or threatened must be of a "high and aggravated nature")

(apparently marital rape wasnt made illegal in Germany until 1997???)

in louisiana it's only technically a state holiday, since they have an "extra" one for mardi gras that everyone gets off for instead

since as we all know holidays are a zero-sum game, you obviously can't just go adding more of them or anything
