Cough Drop The Beat posted:"Emergency use authorization" means nothing more than the drug was/is recommended to have elevated stock levels for potential use by doctors in treating the virus, which was simply the FDA rolling over for Trump's idiot moron demands and no real doctor ever used it for serious treatment unless they were looking to lose their medical license. That's the entire point we're getting at. The FDA just went ahead and did what Trump wanted instead of using their standard protocol. That makes them less trustworthy.

Also, uh, of course no one except idiot chuds will trust an untested vaccine that comes out of nowhere this year with Trump strong-arming the FDA into a September or October Surprise, but I'm talking about a vaccine with an ordinary approval process which is far more likely to actually be released than the former.

My pessimistic hell scenario is that a vocal group of voters will aggressively lobby the FDA for immediate access to a partially-tested vaccine that the media has given widespread uncritical glowing reviews to ($$$). Some unanticipated but nasty adverse effect will manifest and be widely reported on, further poisoning public perceptions towards vaccines in general.

Even if one of the pharmaceutical companies in the US comes up with a viable vaccine it'd still be pretty much impossible for them to manufacture the hundreds of millions of doses that would be needed in a short enough time frame. One of the big stumbling blocks is that none of the manufacturers have the capacity to produce enough doses on their own, and since the vaccine would be worth billions there's just no way that they'd share it with the other manufacturers. The White House would pretty much have their hands tied as well, the could use the Defense Production Act to force other companies to help that manufacturer increase their production capacity but that'd also take several years. https://abcnews.go.com/Health/vaccine-arrives-experts-worry-us-ready-mass-produce/story?id=70167459

it's cute that you think any of the powers that be actually want hundreds of millions of doses, they'll make a couple thou and then lose interest

Vaccines fail to grant immunity in a small proportion of cases. If a sufficiently large proportion of the population receives the vaccine, this is of little consequence because everyone is protected by herd immunity. TPTB have to ask themselves if withholding the vaccine is worth perhaps a one in twenty chance of contracting CoViD from their caddy.
|
# ? Jun 14, 2020 12:42 |
|
What complicates this calculation is the very real possibility that a vaccine would only provide protection for a few months.

Not quite: quote:Following the declaration by the Secretary of HHS that circumstances exist justifying the emergency use of unapproved products, the FDA may issue an emergency use authorization to allow unapproved medical products or unapproved uses of approved medical products to be used in an emergency to diagnose, treat, or prevent serious or life-threatening diseases or conditions caused by chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats when there are no adequate, approved, and available alternatives. I'd say 2/3 of the infectious disease docs I know prescribe HCQ to hospitalized COVID+ patients. not that it's been shown to be efficacious but plenty of MDs are prescribing it. Nobody is losing their license for prescribing it either, thanks to the aforementioned emergency use authorization. You don't know of any doctors prescribing HCQ? What are they using to treat their patients, then?

Went to my gym yesterday in Los Angeles and the gym said you need a mask to come in but wearing a mask is Optional once inside. About only 10 percent were wearing masks.

Cough Drop The Beat posted:This is a very dumb post and I hope you realize how lame and wrong it is. Even if a potential vaccine is fast-tracked, it's going to take 1-1.5+ years for enough clinical testing through multiple extensive trials to be done before the vaccine hits actual FDA approval, which is a very complicated, lengthy process on its own. This is assuming it doesn't take much longer than expected to find a viable vaccine, which could very well happen... or if a vaccine is even possible at all. Literally every doctor friend ive spoken to told me to hold out a bit.

Doesn't matter if you're in a state that has properly mitigated, those southern states will reset the clock for everyone.
