Hitman Absolution is free at GOG for the next 72 hours to close out their summer sale in... well, not style since Absolution isn't exactly great, but in some way or another.

Yes.

It got poo poo on for having a bunch of linear levels but I thought it was a pretty fun game and occasionally bonkers in a b-movie type way (see also: porn nuns)

If it wasn't Hitman it would a perfectly fine Splinter Cell Conviction clone. But it was named Hitman so it was a horrible bad game.

Yeah, if you have no real attachment to the Hitman franchise it's a fun weird stealth action game with some good setpieces and some really bonkers levels. Like there are multiple stages of you working your way through a giant evil mad science weapon company where they're testing landmines by releasing pigs into recreations of suburban neighborhoods and culminates in a giant luchador wrestling match against the company's mascot, or dressing like a scarecrow to lurk undetected in a cornfield as you pick off rival assassins, or breaking into a penthouse and using all the ornate swords and suits of armor on display against the inhabitants.

Even if you are a Hitman fan, now that you know you're going to be getting episodic Blood Money style open level assassinations for the rest of time you don't have to be performatively mad about Those Fuckers At Square-Enix ruining the franchise and can just enjoy it for what it is.

Hitman Absolution is worth playing, I think. JUST REMEMBER, the difficulty system is really weird. It expects you to play on Normal at first and level up your "stealth" or whatever, to make later missions possible. If you attempt the game at a high difficulty level right off the bat, you're gonna have a bad time because your stealth is underlevelled. Trust me on this.

It does have some fun free form assassination levels like the Chinatown market, too. Those are as good as anything in Blood Money.

I believe there are three or four of those levels in the game, the rest being incredibly linear.

Free is the correct price for the title, no question about that.

how do you actually claim the free Absolution? the game's page redirects you to the front page, where you click on the "go to giveaway, and unlike normal giveaways they do, it's just a banner that links to the game's page

They are so focused on shoving their ads in your face that they forgot to put the claim button in.

I managed to claim Hitman: Absolution within the first five minutes of the start of sale and it just showed up in my GOG library, hours later.

Their servers are getting hammered, but I'm sure you'll be able to claim it once the initial rush calms down a bit.

It looks like some kind of watered down version of spacestaion 13, possibly designed to capitilize on the success of Traitor in Terrorist Town. I don't see anything that suggests that it's pay to win.

I still maintain that Absolution and Conviction would have both been better-received games if Jason Bourne had been the protagonist. Unfortunately, they were tied to Hitman and Splinter Cell, and were bad entries in those franchises.

We don't need to have that dialogue because it's obvious, trivial, and has already been had a thousand times.
If you are unable to get a copy of Hitman Absolution for free, you are making a net profit. The game plumbs depths few realize, but its taint runs deep and cannot be cleansed. I did a ton of effortposts on Absolution for an LP awhile back, and the game is full of things like trigger warning: everything dumping the decomposing body of a of a sex worker killed in a snuff film off of a balcony onto a guard, as a joke, but also as a requirement to clear a level in stealth. The gameplay is of a similar caliber.

I played it a bunch a couple years ago. The player base was really small with twice-weekly games organized on the New Blood discord, usually between 3 - 7 people with the lead developer always being one of them. I never got to play any matches that turned out anything like the trailers suggest, as everyone generally knew what they were doing and voice communication was rare, making it much more difficult to team up or keep track of who the alien might be. I was turned off by the leveling system with unlockable perks/skills as it really over-complicates the game right out of the gate and makes learning the ropes a little overwhelming. I was also put off by a lot of downtime between rounds with pre/post-match perk selection/round results/map voting screens that take far too long to get through, with map changes occurring too often. Having payed for the game, I'm really glad it's free now because what it needs above all else is more players, especially new ones. I've complained a lot but it's definitely worth trying and I'll probably check it out again.

It's a bit of a shame because there's countless indie games with a good concept but they really need a decent sized playerbase to be anything other than worthless.

The other title that comes to mind first is The Ship / Murderous Pursuits.

People complaining about Absolution clearly never played Silent Assassin, which was exactly the same way. It was a weird choice to try to go back to the roots of the series when the roots were kinda not great and not nearly as good as what the series had already evolved into.

Hitman 2 Silent Assassin is literally unplayable due to the controls.
