The best charcoal grill you're gonna get is whatever one you can get off craigslist. Especially if you can get one dirt cheap and just buy a new grate for it.

I'm struggling to find a 12" cast iron skillet in the UK. Is this a pandemic thing, or are they usually so expensive?

Lodge is about £60+. Apart from that, there are a couple of unknown brands on Etsy (of all places) - I'm not sure I should trust them, or is cast iron just cast iron?

My other alternative is just to drop down to 10" which gives me a few more options, but I'd be worried about it limiting me if I wanted to roast chickens or something like that?

Should I just suck it up and pay for the Lodge?

e: found a "camp chef" 12" for £26 - worth going for that?

The 12" lodge in america is $30, vs £60 is about $75. Maybe the international shipping on iron kills the price, but wow, that's a huge difference. I can't comment about brand differences, but we have a couple 10", a 12" and a 15" and they all get use. The 10" is way handier, but I get more use out of the 12" because you can really cook a whole dish in it. I personally think that cast iron is cast iron- if it's not so poorly made that it falls apart, then it's gonna work the same. The differences can be in the shape and the finish. Like, the handle might be an inconvenient size or shape. I'd say if the reviews on the camp chef aren't horrible go with that, I can't imagine the difference between it and the lodge being £35+ pounds worth. Uh, finally, the 12" is a pretty big pan. If it's too big for your cooktop situation that might mean you should get the 10" instead.

I guess the prices went up because I got my 12 inch lodge in 2018 for £45 no shipping. Just checked on Amazon and the only one available is £140 plus shipping, so I guess they aren't being imported right now.

Thanks all, I remembered that camelcamelcamel was a thing and checked the price history - looks like prices are historically high right now (probably because global shipping is hosed).

Maybe I’ll buy a cheapo 10” and see how that goes. I was trying to replace a 12” nonstick we have but 10 seems like a useful size too.

Remember, the cast iron will expand when heated, so it's really going to be more like 10.04 inches.

I did some research and chose the Presto ceramic Flipside Belgian waffle maker. It gets to the right temperature, makes crispy waffles on both sides in 4 minutes, and it was inexpensive. No oil required, nearly no cleanup.

Make sure you don't use oil or a cooking spray. Then, cleanup is much harder.

Hi foodgoons. Do any of you have familiarity with Ilve freestanding ranges? 7 years into owning this home and we can finally afford to borrow the money to remodel the kitchen. I'm looking at a 48" 7 burner Nostalgie model freestanding range with a double oven. They are sealed burners and appear to have the dual office burner design. They're about half what a Wolf would cost. I know parts and labor are going to be expensive on a European stove, that is expected. I'm just wondering if anyone here has tried them. It seems like people either love them or hate them, but Consumer Reports doesn't review them so no luck there.

Lodge has the minimum amount of respect for its workers possible and closed its foundry for COVID a while ago. I’m not sure if they’re back up and running yet, but that’s about the most fundamental supply disruption that can exist.

I thought Lodge talked a big game about treating their workers pretty well? I found one article that said they were planning to pay workers through the shutdown, at least.

I want to get a tortilla press. I've read that cast iron is the way to go. The local Mexican markets only have aluminum ones, which I've read can bend and make uneven tortillas. Amazon doesn't have the cast iron Victoria available that everyone raves about, and everything else on Amazon looks lovely and overpriced for cast iron or is aluminum. Am I overthinking this?

No idea about that brand, but it's US$250 for a 12" fry pan, a 10" fry pan, and a small sauce pan/saucier, or a couple of variations on those selections. For around US$150 you could get an equivalent set from Tramontina, who make very high quality pots and pans.

Ideally you should go to a store and pick up and handle any cookware you're thinking about buying because poo poo like how you personally like handling a fry pan is important. But if I suddenly had to replace all my pots and pans and I had to stay in lockdown and I didn't want to wait and pick up individual pieces as they go on sale or something like that I'd go with Tramontina if I was on a budget and All-Clad D5 if I wasn't.

A multi-clad stainless steel pan would be a nice compliment, if only to have something that cooks acid heavy dishes (e.g. shakshuka) and doesn't have to worry about seasoning getting stripped. But if it's not something you are going to be doing with any regularity, you could just hack it with a pot and save the money. Assuming you had a not cast iron pot.

The current All Clad handles are kinda thin, and the inward curve is super uncomfortable. I have large hands, and I would expect the bigger your hands, the more uncomfortable it would be. The previous generation was even worse, so at least they are improving, but they are still really bad, and there's no excuse for a pan that expensive to not have figured their poo poo out. I still own and love 3 pans and 2 pots , I just have to constantly use a towel wrapped around the handles
