That movie was such a shame. A lot of good actors giving good performances, but the script was complete rear end. You don't take the gods out of the Iliad, you dunces.

I usually don't have too many problems when I recruit him, as long as I have a high-up position to give him. If there's one that's occupied by someone who's not unique and really good, I just give them the heave-ho and put in Lu Bu. Cold-blooded, but whatever it takes to make Mr. Crazypants happy.

I am a huge Menelaus fan and it's one of my favourite bits in the Iliad ("Zeus, grant me vengeance against this man who wronged me while he ate my salt and slept beneath my roof!"). You can imagine my dismay as the movie makes him into a bit of a dick, my enjoyment of him thrashing the worthless Paris, and finally my horror as Hector loving kills him. I'm not spoilering it, it's not bloody true anyway.

Brian Cox and Brendan Gleeson were fantastic hams in the Troy movie even if they weren't really anything like Agamemnon and Menelaus were supposed to act. They were both cruel, yes, but with an intended purpose as the harbingers of Zeus's wrath. I love Agamemnon's depiction in the Oresteia because of how it explains his reasoning for his deeds during the Trojan War and why he had to die for his actions. A war of vengeance turns to justice before the gods finally convene to hold court and find a way to stop avenging bloodshed with further bloodshed. Agamemnon was what he needed to be for Zeus, and he had to pay the price for his murders, even as justified as they were at the moment.

Every single time I fought him he'd rack up at least 400 kills on me, and he was also basically invincible in duels when Blood Fury kicked in. The fact that we was unbreakable with the cherry on top of this poo poo sundae.

Unrelated, I just started a Liu Chong campaign in 190 and Ma Chao showed up in the recruitment pool something like ten turns in. In Wu Kingdaissance he comes with a badass lance and horse that puts him in the top-tier Vanguards alongside Lu Bu, Zhang Fei and Sun Ce, so I've never slammed that recruit-adopt-make heir buttons so hard in my life. :getin:

Liu Chong is the faction to play when you just want to spend 10 minutes at the start of every battle setting up perfect crossbow kill-zones and then basically letting the fight play itself. Also it is your duty, once your economy gets going, to ensure every unit in your army has a crossbow. It's a pity there aren't generic crossbow items in the game to complement Liu Chong's. Modders should get on that.

Kong Rong has the best crossbows, Liu Chong has the MOST crossbows plus ways to further buff them and artillery (because trebuchets needed to be stronger.) Chen Royal Guards might not be the best frontline infantry, but they do the job... not that much will ever reach your frontline to begin with.

It's worth noting Jiang Wei was never as high in the hierarchy as Zhuge Liang was. After Zhuge Liang's death, Jiang Wan(who had basically been in charge of things whenever Zhuge Liang was out on campaign) took over and launched a single campaign east at Shang Yong, but was defeated. His health was going to poo poo, so he stepped down in 244 and was dead two years later, and Fei Yi was put in charge. Fei Yi was not really keen on Jiang Wei and kept him on a bit of a short leash. He was more or less in charge until 253, when he was murdered by a dude who had defected from Wei on one of Jiang Wei's campaigns. After that, Shu's well of skilled civil officials seems to have run dry and Jiang Wei was let off his leash while Liu Shan hosed everything up internally(Jiang Wei either couldn't do anything about it or didn't care).
