This is Urotsuki.
It really is kind of incredible how broken the families are in this series. Court's is normal enough, she has a mother and stepdad that actually cares about her, but Beth's parents are clearly estranged and maybe in denial about it and Yolanda's parents need to be reported to child services.

Her dad being away a lot doing sales lends possibility that he's possibly having an affair. I'm definitely a bit excited for the next episode since that's gonna be their first real "mission" and we'll also get to see Sportsmaster and Tigress do their thing.

Beyond that being her arc this season, I reckon Beth's the kind of kid who's not just unpopular, but she's also seen as being actively detrimental to other people's popularity.

So given that her classmates treat her like she's radioactive, and the teachers are all psychopaths (probably), and the Internet doesn't seem to exist, she's not really got any other options.

tbh that's why I don't really blame her for snooping and being a bit of a pest. She's clearly not been socialised very well.

It seems like its more than that, she's actively ignoring everyone else to be with her parents. It's creepy, and clearly her parents agree but don't know how to uncouple her. I have a feeling that she isn't unpopular, just when invited to something she goes "nope! I'm playing Risk with my parents tonight!". Maybe she had a sibling die when she was a kid and felt the need to be close to her parnets to help them get over it?

Also I retract my uncritical nostalgia complaint from earlier, it's clearly a facade, because everyone we've seen in Blue Valley is actually terrible. Also I'm pretty sure lovely Rogue is Dr Ivors daughter. She probably has some weird lizard thing going on under that terrible dye job.

Also Hourboy wanting revenge on Grundy is totally fine and good, because Grundy i some kinda zombie frankenstien thing, you can't really reform him. He reminds me of the Brick Trolls from Bloodborne.

I expect that at some point the ISA is going to find out who Pat is and come after him, and maybe he'll stop being such a stick in the mud about Court's recruitment. That would probbaly be the finale, because i doubt this plotline will be tied up by the end of the season. Though I really hope this isn't one of those "oh drat we had to let the villain get away because we have 5 more episodes this season!" shows.

I kinda expected the goggles to reveal some secret about her parents when she talked about them.

The shots in Courts room with the goggles are pretty neat. I liked "Jeans (dirty)".

She sits at the unpopular kids table, and thinks she and Courtney are friends. She's actively disliked (I think she says as much in the scene she's introduced in, and she clearly loved being at that party despite saying she's never been to one before) and has glommed onto the first person who could remotely tolerate her. Half the things she does this episode screams desperation.

And does the reading that she's actively ignoring everyone bar her parents really square with the way she forced her way into Courtney's crew? Sorry, I just don't see it.

She also saw Courtney and Yolanda acting as superheroes last episode, which is a weird interesting thing. I don't think she cared about Courtney at all before that happened.

I guess you couldn't even put your "son" up for adoption in those circumstances.

That being said, Courtney is a bit stupid. "We can't recruit that girl, she's to competitive." Instead she hands power over to a local delinquent, who threatens to break arms. I know, that thing was his dad's and she's kinda into that whole blood right idea, but that guy could have used a bit of vetting.

To be fair to Beth's parents, Beth's mom is likely picking up at least some of Brainwave's hospital workload and I think we saw her father as one of the members of that theater task group. They might just be really busy.

Well, it does come at the heels of her mom giving her a firm push away last episode. I kind of see it as her redirecting that energy to Courtney.

I assume Pat is gonna take the mentor role for the kids, but I'm kinda hoping Shade does it instead, or at least teaches them the stuff they should be learning like how to lie effectively and how to be discrete about their names and identities and other covert arts.

oval office.

oval office, oval office, oval office, oval office.

The show is relatively fine with Darkseid being ableist, but a working class British/Australian use of a swear word/derogatory term for female genitalia is out of the question, apparently.

Sure, Psycho (where's your doctorate, exactly, Mister Psycho? :pseudo:) is misogynistic, but using the term to both males and females ought to be relatively fine.

Darkseid is ableist as he is someone who believes the strong should crush the weak, but he understands gender equality and that people of all genders should be respected and given equal opportunity to crush their lessers.

Edit: The American usage of that word is way more derogatory than British/Australian usage.

It's all about context. When an Australian lad says "Hey cunts! Let's all go to the pub!" that's cheeky and fun and everyone knows they're in for a good time. When an American super villain yells "You oval office!" at an American female super hero that's not fun and nobody has a good time. Dr. Psycho doesn't use that word for everyone the way the British/Australian folks do, he uses it specifically to demean women because he's a misogynistic rear end in a top hat.

Honestly, I never quite understood what makes that word so incredibly especially derogatory. Does it have any particular historical context, or did someone just decode one day that this is the worst thing you can call a woman after which that was self-fulfilling. I don't really think I want to google that, though.

What I'm starting to notice is DC Universe shows are being made with more 'cinematic' production than the ones that go straight to the CW. All of Swamp Thing and most of the scenes in Stargirl so far have been shot with anamorphic lenses and the lighting is also much more complex. (But looks natural, which is how you can tell it's really complicated.) I think the most any of the CW shows have gotten is an occasional fog filter for dream or flashback sequences and Supergirl got a tilt-shift lens for one episode. So I wouldn't be surprised if there's been some kind of edict from DC to directors that Universe shows have to meet a certain movie-like style or standard, while the CW shows are left to do whatever like regular TV.

(Except the CGI, which sucks equally bad and if anything stands out more in Stargirl?)

The Universe shows were meant to be on their own streaming service as a draw to subscribe (and have the money behind it to do so). Unfortunately it seems as though the service didn't do as well as WB might've liked so it's going to HBO Max and also on CW.

the DC streaming service has what, 4 unique shows? titans, doom patrol, harley and stargirl? what was DC expecting, to pull people in with the back catalog?

I guess 2/4 shows being good is better than average? i dunno? It just seems a bit premature for DC to be pulling the plug.

I believe the intent was not just for the shows but also back-issue comics, the animated movies, and a lot more original television.

Then came the ATT buyout and, welp. That hosed up a whole lot of stuff, and they wanted to consolidate all of the WarnerMedia stuff because they would have had four different streaming apps between DC and like three different HBO ones.

I think once they saw the buyout would be going through SEC regulators, they really ramped down a lot of potential projects that would have been aimed for DC. The Swamp Thing tax snafu also didn't help things at all.

You're right, they're both awful. Ivy at least was the one person who have KiteMan any respect, which makes the betrayal worse since she's pretty much the first person to not treat him as a joke. I still think Harley is pretty terrible to him because she treats him like poo poo whenever they interact and he hasn't done anything to really deserve her ire beyond being a roadblock between her and Ivy.
