The one thing with Oneiromancy is that if "start of round" is after drawing/mulligans (which is probably the case based on Phoenix) you don't get it back immediately. This means not only do you have to use it round one to get it back for round three, but in round two it's vulnerable to things like Viper Witchers and Cantarella.

Hah, Oneiromancy is literally a Royal Decree that can play any type of card (instead of just units) and recycles itself to the top of your deck at the start of the next round after you've used it. Double Ball/Gedy will become a hell of a lot easier to pull off, and Lippy decks will be consistent more often; you can just Oneiromancy your nasty scenario/unit out in R1 (or pull any other good card if you also drew it) and you're guaranteed to get Oneiromancy back to pull it again in R3 (barring Squirrel/Xavier or NG shenanigans, of course).

Edit: My NG Assimilate deck crammed full of nasty tactics and powerful special cards is just as much fun as I thought it'd be in the Season of Magic seasonal mode. In my first three games I've won with an empty opposing board in two, one of which was a 2-0 while a card down against another NG Assimilate deck. (Protip: If you're gonna play Seasonal, you gotta commit to the gimmick. You can't just cram a few more bronze specials into your bog standard meta deck and call it good. If every card you play isn't taking maximum advantage of the rules one way or another, you're losing out on a ton of value. I easily won every game I played against other NR decks with my extra-greedy Uprising deck in the Viper seasonal because they were all trying to go midrange with Draug or Maulers or Kiera and shite instead of just focusing on boosting the gently caress out of everything in sight and then dropping a Yrden for a finisher.)

This is the deck I'm using at the moment. Still working on it and doing the occasional tweaking, though. Also threw together a modified version that runs Renew instead of Heatwave, with a couple other tweaks, though I haven't taken that one for a test drive yet.

Thinking of maybe swapping Uma for Heatwave in that one. Uma's always fun in an RNG sort of way, but it can whiff fairly badly sometimes (though at least it's always worth a few Assimilate procs, and gets some bodies on the board, which can be useful in a special-heavy deck facing double removal), while Heatwave is just a nice solid consistent "erase two enemy units from existence" (and gets really fun when the opponent is all smug about having some huge or valuable unit protected by their buffed shielded armoured Defender...aaaand now they're both gone forever). Good for removing Renew value, as well.

Yen:Invocation is an option as well, but with the doubling, that can actually make your mulligans a little tricky when used in an earlier round, if you have to eliminate a couple units that really aren't useful to you. Might try switching Heatwave for that and upgrading a bronze special if I start seeing a lot of mirror matches, though.

It's a rock scissors paper thing. Wide beats control, control beats tall, tall beats wide.

If you have one or two valuable units Nilfgaard can remove, lock, or steal them. If you have a dozen crappy units they can't do dick.

Was loving around with a stupid ST artifact trap deck today to cheese a daily quest, and somehow managed to win two games; bamboozled my way into a 2-0 against an Uprising deck with a Mahakam Horn (but sadly forgot to record it), and then utterly befuddled a Double Ball opponent by giving him zero poison targets in R1, then bleeding him to death in R2 and forcing out his second Ball, leader ability, and Damien, leaving him with nothing in R3 but a couple lovely bronzes and a three-point Vincent who got blowed up real good by a fireball trap...

Nothing makes me happier than Double Ball failing, apart maybe from banishing Ceres.

Also, I had a forehead slap moment today about one of the spoiled upcoming cards. I had been thinking of Master Mirror's persistent effect as basically a reroll if you didn't like what it turned the leftmost card into. It didn't even occur to me that you could play your leftmost card after it was transformed, then play your rightmost card to transform another card. If you keep alternating left and right you could theoretically have 5 bronzes transformed into legendaries.

Tall removal. People poopoo it, but the starter decks include Geralt of Rivia and it's a solid card. Also, since all the armors will be the same strength they're vulnerable to Igni or Scorch.

Are there any other triggers for this combo or ways to summon her if you don't draw/mulligan it?

Call of the Forest and Royal Decree can both grab a unit of your choice, and Matta will probably grab her because at 12 provision the only other card that might be that expensive in your deck is your scenario.

Syndicate decks are extremely fun once you get a handle on the coin system and not everyone knows how to handle the variations that can be thrown out.

And I personally like screaming about whatever Ewald Borsodi screams about when you play him (best voice actor in the game) as well as HERE COMES THE loving BOAT when you hit the coin threshold for the flying redanian

I checked back into Gwent a few months ago having not really touched it since Homecoming and I immediately built a Syndicate deck because hey, new faction, and I can confirm they are fun to play. My Gwent binge only lasted a couple of weeks but I enjoyed making huge final-round swings with Philippa Eilhart and one other card I can't remember the name of that was some sort of assassin. I was under the impression the Homecoming changes removed the big, impactful play aspect of the game so I was pleased to find that wasn't really the case.

I'm also glad Gwent is still going and even getting another expansion even though I don't play it much anymore. Is it still healthy? It definitely has the best art of any digital card game and it's by far the most generous. I remember making my Syndicate net deck and still having over 200k in scrap left over plus thousands in ore from when I stopped playing, and I think I accumulated that over the course of only a few months of regular play back then.

That's actually good to hear, I've just started and between an early shower of really easy contracts and my Thronebreaker rewards, I've been able to put together a competent deck, but now the contracts are starting to slow down and I was a little concerned about how quickly I'd be earning things by the time I was looking to start expanding into other factions.

Thinking of my competent deck, how much should I be concerned about unlimited removal (like Geralt's any unit over 9)? I'm playing a thrive monster deck and there are a lot of attractive options for consumption, boosts, and even bigger standard units, but shifting from lots of mid power units to fewer high power ones feels like a recipe for swings. So far I'm still in the low tiers of ranked so Geralt is all I've seen, but I'm expecting the game to get a lot more brutal as I climb?

Tall punishment is definitely something to be concerned about if you're playing a big boys MO deck. Geralt's only the tip of the iceberg, and honestly doesn't even appear anymore at higher ranks. You'll soon be running into more outright removal like Heatwave and Poison, as well as resets which will negate your boosts. A good Thrive package will help counter some of that risk, though (since it spreads out your power, making any single reset or removal much less effective), as well as being smart about your Consumes and when to play your big units, and using your power to control the game and ensure a short R3 where your big point plays will be the most effective.

And remember to try to spread your thrive cards across both rows, so Yrden isn't an automatic loss.

Gwent's interesting in that engines get finite value because of the finite turn clock, unlike MTG where any permanent can potentially go 'infinite' unless stopped. And so you get interesting factions like Skellige where you want to keep the opponents around and bleeding to harvest points. And with locks, you can deal with engines without needing to kill them.

NG is control and control is always frustrating to play against, because it disrupts your game plan and makes you feel like you can't do anything to prevent it. Of course that also makes it the most fun to play, if you like trolling your opponent.

That said, it's also a decently powerful faction and can definitely compete at the top tier in the current meta. I suspect the overall win rate is because it is one of the most difficult factions to pilot (along with Syndicate), especially for newbies. NG has no real big point value plays, and its primary engine archetype (Assimilate) is powered by stealing and playing your opponent's units, which (outside of the mirror) don't have any synergy with yours, as opposed to, say, Thrive or Harmony, which just require you to slam down your own fully optimized set of valuable synergized units in the right order. Almost every NG deck gets its value primarily from denying value to the opponent, and to make that work, you have to have a really good idea of what your opponent is going to be doing and how they're going to beat you, otherwise you'll be wasting your control on less valuable units and won't be able to answer your opponent's big plays.

Best Shupe deck I ever saw was in the current Seasonal, actually. Opponent was running SK Second Wind with Lippy and Shupe; played Shupe in R1, then dropped Lippy to reshuffle both Shupe specials into his now tiny deck so he'd draw both in R2. R2, he played those four Shupes and then brought Lippy back with Second Wind to put all four back into the deck (along with the rest of his cards). Dude ended up playing Shupe like ten times, all in all; it was hilarious (and one of the few decks to beat my NG Assimilate special spam deck in Seasonal).

As a new player running NG the hard part is that you need a lot of staple cards to pull off enough control and to actually get ahead in points. Most of the factions have fairly easy to see card synergies but trying to do control when firstly you don’t know the staple cards of the other factions really anyway you can blow your powerful cards easily. Like I’m still understanding how Bribery can work well on an opponent that is running a monster vampire deck which turns out has no starter cards after I play and this is only at rank 25. I do hit or miss against wide plays by hitting generators or using Rot Tosser to bait them into consuming the carcass. That won’t work with the engines possible beyond but it’s kind of frustrating against folks running current meta NG like the Imperial Formation hybridized Masquerade Ball with a bunch of people with ruffles that I swear defines the NG deck building experience.

The game is enjoyable enough but it’ll take a long, long time to catch up it looks to me without playing a metric boatload or paying out a lot in cash

I've been playing this Shupe Kambi discard meme deck, and it's a blast. Opponents often don't quite know what to make of it, which sometimes works to its advantage. Just don't expect to make Pro Rank with it or anything.

Kambi can work even in non-discard decks as well, though it's still pretty memey and inconsistent (it really needs last say or it's mostly useless unless your opponent plays Matta), and some decks like Lippy might have trouble fitting it and retaining enough power to win R1.
