Dicty Bojangles posted:This was the last-gen 160gb iPod Classic (video?). I had assumed it would be like the 5/6th gen which I did a long time ago but now I'm wondering if they glued the whole shebang together on the last gen or if I'm just mis-remembering how tedious it was to change the battery like I did 10 years ago... or maybe I'm just too old anymore. Anyway, had to deep-six the poor thing after all the manhandling. Yeah, I can understand, the last-gen(160gb) and I think the 120gb gen come apart similar to the earlier ones except that there’s about 250% more fuckiness. When they went to a metal front case, they used a similar clip arrangement as the early ones except they used way more clips and each clip has more spring tension. So instead of slipping a pick or plastic tool around the perimeter a few times and having them come apart easily, you need several guitar picks simultaneously on one side to loosen all the clips and allowing you to slide the top off a bit, then move to the other side and do the same thing, repeat several times and it will come apart. Eventually. I found than thin and medium guitar picks work better than any of those cheap Chinese toolkit plastic dealies. They’re tough as poo poo and cheap.

Moo the cow posted:Coincidentally, I've been looking at upgrading my elderly android phone because it really struggles with podcasts, but that is the only thing i has a problem with, so it seems a bit silly to spent $200 on an upgrade. Then I realised that I have a 5G ipod with a dead HDD and it's cheaper to upgrade that. Sure -I’m assuming you’re referring to the 5th gen classic-type iPod rather than the 5gig OG ancient iPod that was FireWire only, right? I originally used the Ifixit guide for teardown https://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPod_5th_Generation_%28Video%29 but there’s a bunch of them on YouTube that seem about the same. I highly recommend a thin and a medium guitar pick for disassembly rather than the triangular tools that everybody sells/gives away with batteries. I start with the area of the case near the 30-pin connector and work my way around the perimeter a couple times, and they come apart fairly easily. The only thing you really need to be careful of is the thin ribbon cables - if you pull too hard when the case halves split, it can tear them. I used to use the normal cheapie ZF 1.8 hard drive-to-CF adaptor cards: https://www.ebay.com/itm/274379695241 Then plug a CF——>SD card adaptor into it: https://www.ebay.com/itm/163451752952 And finally use a SD—>microSD adaptor which often came free with the microSD card.: https://www.ebay.com/itm/174271542342 Then I used some doublestick foam tape to take up the extra thickness that the OG hard drive needed, snap it back together, then plug into iTunes and go. I found that the really large memory cards, like 128gb, take forever for iTunes to recognize and go to the ‘would you like to initialize this iPod’ dialogue, but it eventually works fine. This sounds like a nightmare of adaptors, but it all hooks together cleanly and compactly and I had a 100% success rate over using CF cards, which are hit and miss as far as compatibility. The adaptors are also very cheap, like under $20 for all of them if you’re willing to wait for the Chinese sellers to ship. I would highly recommend also installing a new battery at this time, since it’s apart and new batteries are also pretty cheap. ——however——- Since I don’t do this much anymore, I haven’t had experience with all the new adaptors available for the iPod 5g which hook directly to the MicroSD card and some of them will use two(or more) of them for added capacity. Like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/112307262964 This: https://www.ebay.com/itm/172563414155 Or this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/133107891148 There’s no reason those won’t work great, I just haven’t personally used them and some of them seem pretty pricey. quote:You don't need to share your guide with me, though.

Over the years I've acquired a few pieces of Quadraphonic stereo equipment, but I never really understood much about the technology. I managed to piece together a full quad setup today with an SQ decoder and SQ records. It was neat, but I totally understand why the technology didn't take off. Anyway, I made a video about the whole experience: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFpg0Fe4ARM

I also need to track down a battery for a reasonable price.

Moo the cow posted:Hey, thanks. I really appreciate the effort: you are a cool dude. I just find a popular one on eBay or amazon, I have a suspicion they’re all made in the same couple Chinese factories. I started converting iPods back in ‘07 or thereabouts when CF cards were pretty pricey and a lot of them didn’t work, but when they did work, it was great. I used a 32 gig 4th gen CF conversion when I drove semi trucks longhaul for a couple years after the economy poo poo itself, and after 150,000 miles of vibrating down the road strapped to the dashboard of a Freightliner, it still worked perfectly. No way would a spinny HD stand up to that abuse. Once it got so much cheaper for memory cards, I did a slew of them for people I know, seemed like everybody had a dead 4th or 5th gen in a drawer somewhere. The OG iPod Mini is a good one too, you can use a CF card/SD adaptor plugged directly in to the unit and the form factor is a little smaller. I prefer the longer battery life of the full-size iPods, personally.

That sort of stuff is cool and I wish I'd known about it back when my 80 gb classic bought it. Then I got a 3rd gen Touch which lasted nearly 10 years until 3.5mm jack broke and at that point it was cheaper/easier to just buy a 128 gb micro SD card for like $20 and use my phone for music, since I'm combination too cheap to pay for enough data to stream while driving and drive through a couple dead reception places

I had thought I was pretty well versed on 2600 games, but this one is new to me. Found the back cover blurb: Thanks to good old Virtual Atari, you can play it right in the browser: http://www.virtualatari.org/soft.php?soft=Bobby_Is_Going_Home Review: A few sprites are stolen from Activision, and that's unfortunately the highlight. The gameplay is... well, it's pretty much what you'd expect.
