i like the concept of blue mages because i like breaking games over my knee and equipping yourself with monster spells that don't necessarily play by the same rules as you're expected to is typically a good way of doing it

the hosed up thing in ff14 though, is that they use the numbered spells, but none of them are just straight upgrades of each other except cure I/II, but the numbers lead newbies to believe they are. it's the worst of both worlds

like fire I is the spell you use the most of as black mage, until you get fire IV. fire II is an aoe, fire III is insanely expensive for the damage it does but gives you a buff that increases your fire damage, IV replaces I mostly but if you just cast that one you lose the fire buff so you need to mix a fire I in there occasionally

and cure I/II are single target but cure III is aoe, but an aoe that is used in a different situation than you standard aoe heals medica I/II (which also are slightly different from each other)

Sometimes they are direct upgrades, like when Red Mage's Jolt becomes Jolt II or Scholar's Broil becomes Broil II or Broil III, but in those cases they almost always just fully replace the old version (and just serve as a way to give you a cool new animation as you get stronger, which is good). And then in situations like White Mage with Cure, Cure II, etc., each of those spells is stronger than the last but they still have roles to play.

I think FFXIV's spell design in general would work better with the -ra, -ga, -ja spell names, really, but I suppose there's a certain nostalgic charm to the numbers for English-speaking players who've been fans for a long time.

tfw you get a really good hand in mahjong, but you can't call on the guy that plays into it on two subsequent turns because they only have 400 points left and if you bust them out it's all over, then pop it on someone else to earn a narrow lead and on the next turn and all last have to dodge three simultaneous riichis to maintain your lead

you know, that feel

The show? The first half of season 1 is decent, the second half of season 1 is absolutely dire, the first half of season 2 is okay, the second half is season 2 is good, the movie's really good minus one plot hiccup that's easy to forgive, season 3 is good but goes on a bit too long and doesn't do as much with its ideas as it could.

The games? They vary, hollow fragment was a decent grinding game if you wanted to turn your brain off but lost song was incredibly bad and the gun gale online game was the definition of mediocre. Lycoris looks like it'll be closer to Hollow Fragment so it might be decent.

it's an old flash game but the game I always recommended to people years ago was gamedesign mahjong, because it's single player and has a big list of yaku on the same page.

single player is better to learn with because multiplayer mahjong always has strict turn timers to keep it moving and it can be stressful to evaluate cuts. so any single player mahjong game is probably fine, clubhouse games on switch, yakuza (the translation of stuff in the yakuza games is not consistent with how most riichi games are translated though). people like kemono mahjong but I haven't played it

when you get to multiplayer stuff, mahjong soul right now is what everyone plays

yakuza mahjong starts straight up cheating later

homeless snail
Mar 14, 2007

speaking of cheating the only single player mahjong game I would not recommend learning on are the saki games on psp/vita, cause those are mahjong fighting games and every character has a special power that lets them cheat at the game in specific ways

they're good rear end games, however, they will just gently caress up your mahjong play
