Eh.

You're not wrong but to be honest this is something the vast majority of fiction has to overlook or assume their guesses are right. The fact that anyone in fiction can find the person they're looking for in most settings involves a huge stretch.

That's true, I think it would have worked if you had it be one big moment but if you had it where this version of Tess was constantly breathing down your neck it would get a little silly.

https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/culture/article/the-last-of-us-part-ii-neil-druckmann-interview

quote:

In many ways Gross is Druckmann’s perfect inversion. He’s brooding and introverted, she’s outwardly and exuberantly charismatic. The pair have developed a relationship that’s part creative synergy, part bickering sibling. “You’ve ruined this take!” Druckmann shouts, one afternoon on the mo-cap stage, after her belly rumbles and disturbs the scene. She looks at me, rolls her eyes and flips him the bird. Her pet name for him is seemingly “dumb motherfucker”. The two have had some serious fights too – she had a successful six-month crusade to convince him to swap the fates of two characters – but they always, eventually, get back to harmony.

quote:

For Druckmann, he’s faced years of doubt for even thinking a sequel was worthwhile. “The first game is so sacred. The ending is so sacred,” he says. “People are always like, ‘Do another one but focus [on] all new characters.’ Or like, ‘Do it in, like, Europe. Or do it in Japan. Do something really different.’” But in the end he felt that diverging from Joel and Ellie’s story was the “coward’s way out. To me, at that point, you might as well just do a new IP,” he continues, “versus saying: no, we’re gonna double down and we’re gonna expose what this ending means. To take some of the things that people hold sacred and just... dismantle it.”

quote:

While fleshing out the story of Part II and reflecting on his childhood – on the universality of tribalism, the othering of minorities and the justification of atrocities – he began to explore the themes of retribution, revenge and justice. “I was like, ‘Oh, we can make the player feel that,’” he says. “We can make you experience this thirst for revenge. This thirst for retribution and having you actually, like, commit the acts of finding it and then showing you the other side to make you regret it. To make you feel dirty for everything you’ve done in the game, making you realise ‘I’m actually the villain of the story.’”

quote:

The game’s final scene hangs, still, for the longest time, then cuts to black. Druckmann sits forward and looks at me, his hair a little greyer, his smile wider than ever.

“So, what do you think?”

OK.

I want to throw in two pence here. I have not finished TLOU. I am currently playing it so that I might better moderate any discussion of TLOU2 because I do not wish to be spoiled.

Infinitum made this thread. Infinitum is an IK meaning he has power to hand out sixers and the like. Any time I have seen a report for this thread I have asked him to look in order to help save myself from being spoiled. He has been in contact with me about this and has been trying the calmer approach when asking people to cool down and close the thread for a bit.

If Infinitum has asked posters to do things, then he deserves to be listened to as much as I do when I ask posters to do things. I am going to go back through the thread a little and try not to spoil myself and see if there are any places where I can hand out some appropriate punishments.

This thread will remain closed for a spell while I do this.

Thank you kindly, all.

OK. Round 3.
Let's talk plainly.

TLOU2 is an extremely mature game, that deals with a lot of very mature topics in a no holds barred fashion. This thread exists so you can discuss those matters with others openly.

For the most part I have tried to take a back seat approach to this thread, and only respond to reports that VideoGames has asked me to come in and investigate.
Unfortunately due to the volatile nature of the discussion this can no longer be the case, and I will now be actively reading this thread and probating posters who continue to act like fuckwits.

The mods + IKs have also probated several people over the last day, who you should all use as an example of what not to do, and Stux has been sent on a 2 week extended vacation.

I honestly really do not enjoy probating posters.
Please do not make me have to probate you.
Please do not make me have to gas this thread.

Thank you.

It’s meh.

Some good ideas and poignant moments, some interesting concepts that I don’t feel were particularly well-executed, and a cast composed almost entirely of unlikeable assholes

It’s also goes on way, way, way too loving long, and some sections are pure padding, especially in the Abby detour.

Also Naughty Dog’s style of third-person action really isn’t suited for a game of this length, and it just shows that their gameplay core has not evolved in a significant manner in more than a decade.

Elements of it have been improved with time, but the fundamentals still seem to be stuck in the Uncharted mold.

... I genuinely don’t think I can play another game in this style from them.

If someone says it one more time I'm having Florina show up as a corpse. I'm not even kidding, I was pissed off with people doing that shit back in 2010, and I'm not dealing with it now in 2016.
Actual discussion about reception in foreign markets, apparently a lot of Asian communities has not been positive towards TLOU 2. I'm linking what I saw in a tweet which I'm 90% sure is from Resetera, but it all seems properly sourced.

Sidenote: the video linked in the spoiler is Ellie saying she doesn't like Jessie because he's Asian. I'm 90% in game it's attempting to be comedy, and I doubt that's the reason, in fact consulting with someone who does translation the general responses in those forums and from those communities is mixed, some of them are reasonable, others are not.

quote:

The majority of them hates TLOU2 so far. Their complaints are mainly like “terrible writing”, “how can I not kill Abby”, “why do I have to play as a gorilla (Abby)”, “Political correctness bullshit”, “the love scenes are unnecessary whether it’s LGBT or not”, “what an unpleasant gaming experience”, “gently caress you Anita”, “worse than the leak”, “the characters are all ugly”, “what part of this game am I supposed to enjoy?” Etc.

Nothing too surprising, like I said a mix of legitimate and eyerolling.

For gently caress sake, this is not what happens in the scene.

Ellie jokes about how people thought she had a crush on him. Ellie is established to be a lesbian (only describes attraction to female characters)

But ellie says "you're handsome but you're not my type" because her type is WOMEN

Jessie says "what, Asian?" joking, because he knows she's lesbian

Ellie says "uh huh, that's what I meant" sarcastically because she meant men aren't her type

There are three major Asian characters in the game all three of which are some of the most likeable and positive characters in the game

I wonder if there was bad translation in the Korean version??

Ps: game is great, GOAT imo

Hello spoiler thread, I beat the game today and for the most part it was fun even when it tried real hard not to be.

Pros:

Combat was hella fun if you like that ND style already
Looks really good(even if it makes my ps4 sound like a jet engine)
the flashback scenes work really well
I kinda liked the ending even if getting there was real messy
Combat is fun enough i'd totally play MP if it came out.

Neutral:

The trans character seemed fine? I'm not knowledgeable enough to comment further honestly.

Cons:

The pacing if real loving bad. Choosing the twist of playing Abby over proper pacing was a big oof
It really should have just stuck with the theme of "revenge and its costs" rather then try and do and whole bunch of other things story wise.
Last 3 hours or so felt bloated and unnecessary, could have just ended at the first "ending" and nearly gotten the same result.

Basically Game play i'd give like a 9 but i'm a weirdo who likes ND games, Story probably wavers between a 5 and 8 depending on chapter

Yeah but I mean that's the point, its about how identitarian hate on the basis of one act can lead to extreme violence, it doesn't matter if there's actually huge differences between the groups (race, religion or whatever). The groups are essentially the same, multiracial survivors who have found a sense of normalcy post apocalypse yet still are driven to depersonalisation

It's very hard to, but almost all of the encounters where I tried to leave without killing everyone, I was able to, so I imagine it's possible in theory.

Interesting! The videos I’ve seen seemed to indicate that you were essentially forced into killing everyone in your path, but it’s possible I just watched players who decided to go for a Terminator run.

It wouldn't be very interesting or in keeping with the game's design to just try and sneak past everyone or be non-violent, so I don't know why that would be surprising.

Shaped like a friend

Friend asked me for a legit breakdown as to why people dislike the game, I don't really intend to watch it or anything as I'm just here for the discussion so would you say this is a fair assessment:

*Joel's death is pretty poorly written and contrived in a 'unrealistic' scenario in that he acts wildly out of character
*Abby is mostly unlikable. Most people I've seen say she's just not entertaining, and her reason for killing Joel isn't realistic (hunting him cross country etc) and even when you do find out why nobody cares because the fireflies were painted as bumbling idiots that were willing to murder children last game
*Lot of people have issues with a character named Lev, who is a lightning rod of bad things happening to them because they're trans.
*Ellie has a lot of plot holes tied to her that don't make a lot of sense and don't match up with the first game. Example I saw was her discussing her favorite movies when in the first game she barely knew what a movie was, or knowing the full lyrics to 'Take On Me' while not even understanding what a model was in the first game until Joel explained it.
*The sex scene isn't really needed and doesn't add anything to the plot
*The dog/'friend' call outs are more corny and stupid then anything else.
*The ending sees Ellie gunning through thousands of dudes but when she reaches her target she gets a literal last second vision of Joel for no reason and gives up, loses her fingers, loses her music, and now must live alone curled up in a old house broken while Abby escapes scott free and loses nothing after completing her revenge quest.
*Neil seems to be a grimy lovely person to work for so there's camps that hate it and blow it up because he's a awful human being.
*Chuds and generally terrible people are also hating on it because the idea of playing as a woman or a girl scares them

Does this sound about right as a summary?

Saying Abby gets off scot-free is overselling it a bit. Ellie murders basically every person she's on a first-name basis with except for one, including a pregnant woman and a former lover. It does still feel like there's an imbalance since Abby still has something left at the end while Ellie is left a walking void.

I think "meh" is where I settled on it, which is a loving awful considering the production values and more importantly that Naughty Dog worked their people half to death to get it done.

I don't think it's a fair assessment because it paints these opinions as objectively supported by the game narrative, but that's simply not true, and it's hard to take these points in good faith when some of them are plainly false.
edit: I'm getting the impression you compiled the list from other opinions posted online, so I'm not directing this at you specifically, what I mean is that whoever fanned the flames of certain opinions had an axe to grind, either towards the game, towards the author, towards the perceived themes of the game, dunno.
