Platystemon posted:Plenty of English animals names are like this, we just laundered them through other languages. yes thats the interesting linguistic part. modern Chinese doesn't have an older language like Latin/Greek/Old versions of itself/etc... to go back to like English and many other languages do. Like unless you studied the stuff, your average English speaker would not know hippopotamus means river horse, etc... But because of how characters work and mainly due to how they are not phonetic but rather semantic in nature, characters often have the same meaning as they did hundreds and hundreds of years ago which makes it more in your face. like hippo in chinese is 河馬 which also means, literally, "river horse" and was in fact how I found out hippopotamus means river horse in English. other fun ones: turkey is fire chicken raccoon is washing bear panda is bear cat kangaroo is pocket mouse owl is cat-headed eagle giraffe is long neck deer etc...

River horse is fairly easy to work out if you know what a Hippodrome and the Potomac are. Though I know the Potomac doesn't derive from Potamos I assumed they worked it backwards into that when anglicising it. OwlFancier has a new favorite as of 07:33 on Jun 22, 2020 |

"Emotions are feminine ladeedah" gently caress the gently caress off, most wars were fought over a bunch of super hetero man getting overly upset about something or wanting to get laid. Men are extremely emotional and I'm so goddamn sick of this poo poo. Y'all get violent over the dumbest poo poo, just loving own up to it already.

notable snippets: "I have enormous respect for every single police officer, especially right now." "now I CANNOT WAIT to vote red baby!!" "Conservatives are the most accepting out there." "Welcome to the new counter culture." apparently there aren't counter protests because conservatives are following the 1967 model "We accept everyone here." and just the entirety of that last one Another top post right now is "Long time conservative liberal here. The Marxist Democratic agendas are getting out of hand. The fact they are going to take down Teddy FREAKING Roosevelt’s Statue drove me back to reality." and it's just as much oppositeofreality.png except for the "conservative liberal" part quote:What the gently caress was I thinking? Democrats are basically making people accept an ideology that’s really 1% of the population and a very vocal one for sure with deep loving pockets. Look at the loving example of how the Left wants to take down Teddy Roosevelt’s state in front of a NYC museum. It’s ridiculous. What’s next? FDR? George Washington?
