SniperWoreConverse posted:are you loving making GBS threads me Serious answer, the rules about collecting things (fossil specimens, pretty rocks, plants, all kinds of collectible things that aren't individually protected like endangered species) are regulated by local, state, national, and international regulations that overlap and create a mishmash. But, collectors have generally created websites and guidelines that help guide people to sites where collecting is legal. In the US it's generally illegal to collect anything within national parks and monuments, usually state parks, and sometimes local parks. Often there's exceptions for collecting a small amount of food plants for immediate personal use, and for letting your horse forage, poo poo like that: but you're technically not allowed to pick up a feather or a pretty rock from the ground in a national park and take it home, even though millions of people do. On the opposite end of the scale, Bureau of Land Management land is extremely permissive: you can't like start a mining or timber company without permission, but you can typically hunt, fish, collect (non-endangered) plants and animals alive or dead, etc. and definitely collect fossils. Geologists, archaeologists, and other sciencey types often have special permission to collect even where doing so would be illegal for the public. Generally nobody can collect on private land without the landowner's permission, but various state laws can also prevent a landowner from excavating important sites without some kind of permission or oversight. This particular Instagram person has a youtube channel with an "about" section saying he's an amateur New Zealand fossil hunter. A little googling suggests that with some important exceptions, it seems to be legal to collect fossils on public land in New Zealand. It's likely that a beach is public land and that it's totally legal for him to collect that fossil creb. Leperflesh fucked around with this message at 05:48 on Jun 22, 2020 |

My mom and I were in waist-chest deep water at the beach and a couple big rear end crabs gave our feet and ankles some very gentle (exploratory?) pinches before moving on. I still feel blessed.
