The number of deaths doesn't seem to be growing. Not growing yet might be implied there, but hopefully NY and NJ learned some lessons in treatment that others will have learned from. Until we fill up the hospitals at least.

Within the last month or so, they also have found a drug treatment that has been shown, with actual evidence, to significantly reduce the fatality rate. Even if more people get infected, the fatality rate is probably going to go down. At least until the hospitals fill up or the drug runs out.

I'm not seeing any journal publications in this article or in the CDC announcement showing that surface transmission is rare, only that the virus does survive on surfaces. And from the very start the CDC has advised almost the opposite to what's been advised by the army of scientists and doctors who are actually studying and treating Covid-19

So I'm going to remain skeptical about this claim

Undoubtedly good news, reducing death by a third in critical patients

Wearing masks and washing your hands and self isolating isn't a 100% guarantee that you won't get the virus, it just mitigates the probability as much as humanly possible. Even if you take every precaution possible you're still rolling the dice every time you step out your front door.

On the other hand, there's also a chance that you might never get it even if you're an idiot who doesn't wear masks or maintain 6 feet of distance, just out of sheer dumb luck. It's all a crap shoot.

the whole point of following the social distancing and masks and stuff is to slow down the rate of contagion so that the system, shipping, farming, health care, etc you name it, isn't all affected at once

Last week, Los Angeles County joined a number of other nearby counties across central and southern California in reopening its restaurant dining rooms. The news, first reported by Eater on Thursday night, became official on Friday afternoon, with restaurants told they could allow diners to eat inside as soon as that evening — even before official health and safety guidelines had been provided.

Most epidemiologists have said from the very beginning they fully expect up to 80% of humanity to get it

The question was always whether populations would get it fast enough to overwhelm hospitals, or maybe a treatment would arrive and we’d buy time and avoid unnecessary deaths

I was skeptical about how big of a deal this was because of loving course you're going to treat respiratory inflammation with a common steroid. Today I read an article from the University of Colorado saying they've been treating people with this since March.

So don't read too much into it.

Yeah that was when they thought the best we could do was flatten the curve.

It turns out that it’s totally possible to bend the curve to a decline and many countries have done that. With contract tracing and other health measures where applicable, they can keep the virus suppressed indefinitely, till a vaccine is available, and never have more than a single digit percent of the population face the disease.

Wearing a mask is more about protecting others than it is about protecting yourself. This person basically had a hundred or more people walk by him without masks on, and while he tried to avoid them there's not much you can do when you're standing by a crowded restaurant for 30 minutes

He didn't follow gently caress-all when it comes to rules.

He followed guidelines given by idiotic/cowardly us administrations who have to contend with a population base that is almost uniformly self destructive idiots.

The RULES are: To protect yourself wear a N95/FFP2 masks or better; to protect OTHERS wear any other mask. If wearing community protection masks: Keep 2 meters distance from anyone with a mask, keep 10+ meters distance from any murderer without a mask (anyone without a mask is at least an attempted murderer at this point), do not be in public buildings that aren't actively and strongly ventilated (not stay, be, never be in one).

To repeat the important part: Community masks only protect you if everyone wears one. Everyone. Sadly the USA has a hilarious abundance of assholes.

Also: Make a conscientious attempt to wear it correctly, e.g. no pulling under the nose, which is something a lot of politicians love to do because they're idiots or have staff who want them to be murderers.

He kept saying "it'll go away on his own" because his childhood church preached about magical thinking and he to this day believes saying a thing multiple times makes it happen. Now that we're deep in the poo poo and looking at probably 200,000+ dead this year, he realizes it's too late to "fix" this and is instead focusing on making people forget about it.

I think somewhere in his tiny brain he realizes that politicizing masks was a mistake, but he's too vain to wear a mask or to admit he made a mistake.

You can realistically pin 10s of thousands of deaths directly on Trump being dumb and lazy as poo poo.
