Super Mario Brothers 3 has established the canon that Mario is in a play, playing Mario. In light of this, I think it's obvious: Mario is just being replaced with a taller (or shorter) actor.

actually, nothing prior to first galaxy game can be considered canon anymore, because mario reboots the universe at the end of mario galaxy.
