This is some real OSHA poo poo. Look at these clowns. Also lol when the real Fire Dept show up and they tell them they don't want help so they pack up and leave....only to be called back a short time later because Grants Pass RFD can't handle the situation.

Also I learned that a lot of places in the US apparently you have to pay a yearly subscription fee to your privatized fire department or else they just let your house burn if you're not a customer of theirs. :laffo:

that's not the event you're thinking of

there are some that are organized as a rural co-op with unpaid firefighters. the example you're thinking of was from a rural area where a small town had a government-run fire department, but they would provide coverage to the surrounding county if the people paid a yearly fee (in other contexts, we call this a tax). the people whose house burned down had not paid their fee that year

private fire departments exist in some context in like, really rural areas at high risk of fire. they're pretty uncommon though

They had a policy of giving people one freebie with the hopes that they’ll realize the importance of paying your optional taxes to live in a society.

It was the second call out where they merely watched the house burn down after making sure folks were safe.

They exist in non-rural areas. This company has what appears to be a bunch of suburban locations, and I assume there's probably other companies doing the same thing in other places.

Hey! Those crossing panels came from the company I work for (you can tell by the way it is)

From time to time, a/e firms will reach out to us for an off-the-shelf solution for low-slung trucks crossing humped track crossings. The major design constraint is that the crossing surface has to be flush with top of rail, and the only way to remove the hump is to lower the track or raise the approaches.

"But we can't feather out the approaches any further, there's an intersection less than 50 feet away"
"Lowering the track will be too expensive and the railroad won't pay for that"
"We can't raise the whole intersection next to the track that would be really expensive too"

It's at that point I give up and say "Well, I guess get some more signs up to tell trucks not to go that way, then"

When I was a much younger, thinner, and less wise Helen Highwater, I did an apprenticeship at the Hotpoint factory. They had their own fire department because they worked with some really nasty processes and the 6-10 minutes or so that it would take the county fire department to arrive was 4-10 minutes too long. I joined, we got the same training as the local volunteer brigade, and we mostly spent our time restoring the beautiful series 1 Landrover fire tender that had less than 1000 miles on it.

I've seen things like this happen at work, even got a weird call about it one morning. New mechanic was bringing a unit to the shop, every time you hit the accelerator the lift deck would go up. Both are hydraulic powered, but there is no way those two systems are connected. Except for -you know- the fact that they definitely somehow are connected.

You should put a bridge over it so that the trucks can't pass under it and will choose a different route.

I'd suggest a height of 11 foot 8 should be perfect.

iirc there were also insurance implications, in that if a firefighter were to be injured while they were putting out the fire at the location where the owner wasn't part of the scheme, the insurance company would say that it wasn't in the line of duty and that they were acting as private citizens

not sure if that was actual or theoretical, but it did come up before.

Going to a structure fire...in Nomex. Zero turn out gear. A dude in a traffic vest. People taking off their hard hats left and right. Civilians walking into the work zone. Literal teenagers in very well used Nomex. Antique fire engines, those two engines they showed were up to date in the mid-1960s.

Trying to put out a structure fire with anything less than a 1k GPM engine.

Holy poo poo, the list goes on and on. No McLeod's, Pulaski's, or even R-5s anywhere.

That would make sense as the car recording it is clearly stopped. I guess the white car didn't figure it could clear the van on the left? Tried to come waaayyyy over to the right instead. He chose poorly.
