spent 6 hours doing video chats for a pseudo onsite last week. they just called to let me know they're not making an offer because they want someone with "more experience shipping software" despite the fact that they reached out to me knowing I'm a student about to graduate... and I've shipped and supported like 5 pieces of software. wonder what the real reason was

There's a good chance that the recruiter and hiring manager were not on the same page until after your interview. Hanlon's razor and all that.

I feel stupid leaving reviews for anything but did once when I got a take home that carelessly exposed some info on all previous applicants and got ignored when I brought it up. I'd like to think that review was helpful to somebody Also been seeing a lot of glassdoor reviews recently with the covid tag that let me know which companies ruthlessly spy on their employees, which is helping a lot

I once had a coffee with the actual hiring manager for a "JVM" position and at that chat I was extremely clear that outside of university, I do not have Java specifically experience, despite having almost a decade experience in many other languages (C++, python, SQL, Perl, JS). Then I did their java based take-home and invited after that to an on-site interview. I thought I did really well, until I got rejected a week after they said they'd get back to me with the reason "the team decided to continue looking for someone with more Java experience". Don't even attribute these decisions to stupidity. I honestly put this down to a severe miscommunication between not only recruiter and hiring manager, but hiring manager and team, 2 red flags right there.

The point being that don't beat yourself up about it, you can be rejected for any reason whatsoever, and a lot of the time it's got absolutely nothing to do with how well you did in the interview or how capable you would be on the job. Sometimes one guy just really doesn't like a candidate for literally no reason at all, nothing you can do about it. Learn what you can, but outside of that, take it on the chin and move on.

Yeah. Having been on the other side of the table a fair bit it's also really difficult to know if you're making a good or bad decision between different candidates. I have been on hiring panels where six different people said "that's a yes form me" but no one was especially enthusiastic so the person with the final decision decided we should pass. The more people involved the more uncertainty there is about what hiring a specific person is supposed to achieve, and some interviewers may literally not be sure why they're even running an interview - they haven't seen your resume and may not even know what position you're interviewing for. Don't take this elaborate guessing game personally.

this is real common feedback it’s possible that they thought at the beginning generic experience would make up for lack of subject X at the beginning of the process but after interviews figured out that wasn’t going to work or you suck and the lack of experience was a nice excuse or you sat in the interviewers favorite chair or they found somebody else it means nothing

a tech lead reached out to me directly on linkedin a few days ago. no recruiter or anything and he plainly laid out what the job was. just finished the first interview and they seem to be very enthusiastic with bringing me in, the money is right, and it'd be a huge decrease in my expected travel. the downside is the job sounds boring as poo poo

That makes sense. I was really struggling to envision the day to day for that skillset. They also have 2 other listings with the same title and lists of 12 random tech things. So three promos in the works.

Are the "minority outreach" job boards etc any good, or just a grift? It's the only possibly meaningful change work is making but they also seem way, way more expensive than normal candidate search. We're struggling to hire minority candidates (although have a not terrible gender ratio by industry standards), but I suspect that's about more than just not advertising in the right place. We don't normally use recruiters because they're terrible at this sort of thing but maybe specialist ones can help, idk
