I proposed it as a roguelike in the relevant thread and was very roundly told it wasn't one! But in my heart it's still got roguelike DNA

Yeah, I kinda agree with them, while Mercband games have some roguelike traits, in that they are system heavy and normally have some procgen. I just don't think they have enough other roguelike stuff to fit.

While most Mercband games have an Ironman mode, permadeath isn't really a defining feature. (For most players.)

I guess in roguelikes you have runs and in Mercband games you have campaigns if that makes sense?

Strategy roguelike?

Strokelike :colbert:

I must be the only idiot who actually plays this on Ironman. Have to say it really needs some quality of life features to make Ironman viable (eliminating city save lag and reducing strategic map YASDs)

Probably why I can count the times I've made it to a crisis on two hands

It's just a Turn-Based Strategy. Yes theres procgen elements, but really no more so than in Xcom2.

If you are of the view that genres have collapsed then you can call it an xcom-like.

Yeah I've tried Ironman a few times but ultimately the feature set of the game doesn't lend itself to it very well. If we had automatic pausing on the strategic map when an enemy party comes into line of sight and the ability to camp within towns to avoid ambushes or escape chases, I think it would be much better. I end up playing BBros similar to how I do Bronzeman Xcom - reloading on an individual combat to start the whole combat over is fine, but no rolling back the clock otherwise

I just save in between villages because i'm not always staring intently at my screen while I play and don't wanna get wiped due to that. Ironman was fun for a couple of months but i can't be bothered anymore.

I mostly do this; but with the additional caveat that I do a save and reload to find out the stats of potential recruits in town because I feel the current system is needlessly punishing (and the tryout feature doesn’t give you enough info to tell if someone will be good).

Yeah, same. But although the tryout system sucks though, I can generally get a reasonable feel for someone's ability based on that and their fee - so normally I try not to savescum it too much.
But yeah, the tryout feature could use some work, for sure. Maybe telling you what stars they have in what skills, perhaps? (In addition to the info they already give. Assuming I'm remembering correctly, anyway - it's been a couple of months) That way they're not giving you the full values for their skills, but it at least gives you a vague idea?

EDIT: Also, I've still got that "where there's a whip" LOTR song stuck in my head, over 24hrs later. I'm not sure whether I should be happy or annoyed! :D

Fee differences in a given background are mostly a function of what gear the bro brings with them though.

That's true - that can impact it a lot. Especially when hiring expensive bros. But I mean among more low-tier people, like if you're choosing between a couple of farmhands, for example. They've both got awful gear and no traits, but one's priced a bit higher, kinda thing.
I could be totally wrong, though. But I dunno, after taking a look at all the recruits and reloading a few times, I seemed to get a much better idea of how good they'd be, judging from the price-point. I could easily just be lucky though - I'm just as happy with being lucky than right, personally! :v:

Domina is great. One of my crappy naked dudes I sent into a fight unarmed as blood tribute won by tearing somebody's throat out with his fists. Subsequently he became my star gladiator and got me to the end game before retiring to life out in the country side.

Kinda shallow though.

It's so good. I played it first as a kid with the active attack meter things that let you guarantee crits and such. I enjoyed it much more on revisiting when you turn that feature off and play it more like a traditional turn-based tactics game. The active meter let you just ignore so many different mechanics. It's a devil of a game to find these days, lucasarts is long gone and I'm not great at emulation post like super NES

This game is really hitting the same vibes as xcom imo which is great, but I am very confused as to what tone the devs were aiming for on the overworld sections.

Some interactions read as milktoast, "unfunny but inoffensive" theatre kid comedy poo poo, while others have big, "90s edge too cool" energy.

At first I thought it was supposed to have like an absurdist concept of "ah look how stupid and brutish your guys are, they cant read or write" which i would get as like a concept, but it seems like some scenes were meant to be taken as genuinely cool or dark?

It all just does not land for me at all.

Yeah, the only encounter where the writing hits me right is the black monolith. I think it sets a consistent tone of a bleak world and bleak men, but the fact that that tone never changes as your company gets more elite and powerful is a little strange.

I think the easiest way to explain it is that the writers think it's genuinely cool and dark that your guys are supposed to be stupid brutish illiterate thugs. It's the only consistent thing about the writing but while it's sometimes played for laughs, usually it's the game putting words in your mouth to tell you that you're not supposed to care about anyone else or ever want to help them because everyone else is scum that's beneath you.

It kinda works out that way too. There's 0 consequence for stealing swords, robbing farmers, etc. I think the most i had was when I robbed a dude who was trying to bait wealthy travellers into an ambush and my fresh hire who had 40 on both Matt and ranged took an injury, so i just fired him on the spot (i only kept him about because he had a net i wanted to throw at some point).

Although i'm not against a game where being an actual rear end in a top hat is encouraged. There's not many of those about, its a shame some of the writing is so hammy but these days i just skip it all.

It is like someone read The Chronicles of the Dark Company by Glen Cook and took the wrong messages away. I really liked the grimy, low fantasy attitude when I started the game, but now it feels like someone trying way to hard to be "fantasy by way of HBO."

I'm not going to lie that the slaver army in the middle east expansion is rubbing me really the wrong way, especially considering the history of slave armies in the middle east. It feels so forced for the sake of being edgy at best, and at worst leads to negative feelings towards the devs. Why even risk the controversy when you already have a fantasy setting? Make them blood cultists of not-Davkul or whatever.

I dunno, I haven't seen anything in the game so far that really strikes me as edgy. If anything it feels pretty constrained since we're presumably, roleplaying a captain of a bunch of sellswords in a grimy low-fantasy world. There's an uncountable amount of incredibly dumb edgelord poo poo you could have in the game that would 100% fit the setting they refrained from, which is probably for the best.

All the events I've seen or I've seen happen to friends/streamers have been pretty well written. Many of them are pretty funny. The event you can get where you can have someone 'dumb' in your company agree to race a horse on foot on a bet and win is pretty funny, the golden statue event was pretty cool, the tower event is cool, the event where the fortune teller witch gives you a dagger when you both embarrass yourselves because you accidentally lean on her table and smash it is funny, the event where you can get trolled by the boy crying wolf like 3-4 times in a row is funny, the event where a 'dumb' company member can make a monk unit happy by pretending to understand education is funny. I also like the event where you find someone trying to make a sideshow out of an alp trapped in a pit, when you have a beast hunter in your company.

The only stuff I've found kinda eh was most of the events where it's just a "do you wanna be a dick and rob someone" check.

I like the one where an Alp tries to lure you into a field at night! At least I think it's an Alp, the modus operandi was distinctly Alp-ish. Made me appreciate them as encounters more though they're still a pain

It's mostly the edgy stuff. The aforementioned farm one is pretty lovely, the robbing someone checks are always pretty bad and then you've got the "as if you give a poo poo what the man thinks" when you escort someone which makes me roll my eyes.

But yeah, there is a lot of good to go with the bad. I still laugh every time my company gets pelted by kids with rocks.

The way robbing people is presented is generally insanely corny as far as what I've seen. It's always presented like

"A sickly old man walks up to you and looks at you with his gigantic puppy dog eyes and asks you if you can point him in the direction of the city his grandkids live in. You notice he has a gigantic emerald ring."

The game has actual rape in it. The refugee background used to have several really offensive stories about them being cowards and worthless as people that got removed because of complaints. There are other egregious errors, but it's mostly people trying to do Warhammer style worldbuilding but throwing the punches at poor people wanting a better life instead of the rich and powerful.
