The worst thing about Starkey's comments in 2011 is that they were a big deal, people were talking about that in the papers and so on, it definitely wasn't overlooked, and then six months later or so he was back on telly doing history programmes again. I could not believe that he hadn't destroyed his career, but obviously I should have done.

To present historical programs in Britain you have to A) know what the Empire did and B) be super cool with it and probably touch yourself to pictures of Queen Victoria.

Have it on good authority that Starkey tugs himself to the tune of "I'm Henry the Eighth I am" and the intercourt drama of the Tudors.

Unite seems like one of the better major unions, their leadership was pretty well supportive of Corbyn albeit with a brexity streak I think, if that's a problem for you.

Also they weren't part of the labour office sabotage and their leadership has not recently been revealed to be full of sex offenders, so there's that.

Unite are decent at the national/political level, but your experience in your workplace will depend 100% on your reps - I was a Unite rep at my last employer, it added easily 5 or more hours a week onto my workload (it was an unbelievably toxic workplace mind you), and I got very little help from the other reps because they were too afraid of upsetting HR (the loving cops of work). Our upstream contact at Unite was mostly useless and had to be forced with threats of violence to loving stay on topic and not start meandering tales of the eighties or whatever. Lovely person to have a drink with, gently caress all help when someone is facing the sack.

I'd definitely encourage you to join - solidarity is important - and if you have some fight in you then become a rep, it can be very rewarding. Not quite as rewarding as quitting the loving labour party but still, take it where you can in hellworld.

Seems you don't always get to vote in things - there were some ballots in the last few weeks, a friend was standing, but I didn't get a vote. I'm not sure of the whys and wherefores and haven't had enough incentive to bother to look into it yet.

quote:

Labour Leader Keir Starmer Appeals To Black People Not To Leave The Party
HuffPost UK revealed in June that scores of Black members and voters had abandoned the party membership following racism concerns.

....

“I’ve spoken to the Black, Asian and minority ethnic staff network to express how much I want to work with them, to ask them to give me their ideas and their challenges – and the idea of having an audit and diversity panel or board within the Labour Party came from those discussions,” he said.

“To some extent I’ve inherited this problem – I’ve just come in as leader of the Labour Party and the staff that are in place [across the party] have been working here for some time.

It said the UK had "unequivocally recognised opposition leader Juan Guaidó as president", rather than President Nicolás Maduro.

The ruling comes after the government launched legal action against the bank to try to force it to release the gold.

It is a severe blow to Mr Maduro's cash-strapped administration.
