I think my 350 megabyte maxtor which replaced the 40 megabyte drive the lc came with cost $300. I upgraded the poo poo out of that lc. Had a daughter card with an fpu because the 68LC040 processor lacked it, which meant i couldn't run games that required it. Also upgraded the vram to 512k which allowed me to display thousands of colors on my 640x480 apple rgb display (which was a sony trinitron tube that weighed the same as a small elephant).

Speaking of old games, and forgive me if I've brought this up before, but I would kill for a remake of the old Maxis game Robosport. It was a robot fighting game where you had a map that you and your opponent would plot your robots' moves on for each turn and then generate the turn. Each turn was 30 seconds of action or something, and moving from one square to the next would take 3 seconds or whatever (probably depended on the robot type), or you could set it to monitor an area and shoot at anything it saw, or just shoot a predetermined spot. It was a simple interface that seemed like it would be ideal for an asynchronous multiplayer phone game. Once both opponents have programmed their turns, send notifications to them and let them watch the action unfold.

The guy that sold me my computer showed me how, with the hypercard demo stack that came with it, you could type MAGIC on this one particular card and it would unlock all the editing features and let you make your own poo poo without buying the retail product.

I loved hypercard because you could make little animations and stories with it. I made some kind of story about a killer whale.

They really did have a protection plan for almost everything there. I just performed the stupid loving dance to keep management off my rear end about it. The monkey at Best Buy or Walmart asking you if you want the protection plan or extended warranty probably feels the same way.

I worked at Best Buy in college and I swear that the only job task for the Sales Manager was to wander around the store all day vaguely threatening employees who didn't sell the extended warranties.

They even had the LP guys taking notes on products that left without those plans and submitting cashier IDs of people who failed to sell them.

I was driving today and realized Ontario is probably a tech relic.

Was probably cool in like 2002: subscription service with a concierge you could dial into and be like "Hey what's a good steak place / where can I get gas" and an operator would talk to you via the little rearview mirror mic. It would also provide tracking if the vehicle was lost, had an SOS button in case of accidents or emergencies, and could save a bank of numbers to call people.

Now, uh, do it on your phone with BluTooth?

Aggressive autocorrect is *not* a tech relic.

Man, those demo stations in stores was the coolest poo poo back in the day. Last I saw them was when the 3DS was still new and that's actually my only experience seeing how the 3D effect worked in-person. Back in the PS2 days they were basically everywhere and always had some crappy game nobody wanted on rather than something actually good you'd actually want to try out. Also the controllers were dirty and beat to poo poo every time.

e: After looking over this post I've come to the realization they actually sucked even when I was a kid and in retrospect suck more actually

I first played Sonic on one of these in a UK store:

The controller was actually fixed to the cabinet so you couldn't pick it up and had to play it like a keyboard. Also as like a 7-8 year old I couldn't see the screen properly as it was too high.

My first time ever seeing (outside of pics in gaming mags), touching or playing a Sega Genesis was at a demo kiosk in Sams club. It has Sonic 1 in it and I knew I had to have one.

Same story for SNES and SMW actually at the local Walmart.

I think they went ps eye because it didn’t need controllers

He doesn't say a price, but he does mention it being in his collection. I'm going to assume it's just because it's packed so tightly in there that he doesn't think he'd be able to get it back together and it already works as intended. No sense fixing something that isn't broken.

Especially since it would be just a VHS mechanism and a bunch of mystery boards on the inside -- not much interesting to gawk at, in my opinion.

He definitely bought it. He's reluctant to take apart because he probably saw the service manual and it's an incredibly involved and risky process.

Afaik Techmoan doesn't really borrow anything unless it's super rare, and even then he'll very clearly say who he's borrowing it from.
