I mean, it made sense on the grounds that he was a rich NFL star and Flair just wanted to make his enemies look bad and go jet flying, limousine driving, etc. And I mean, we're talking a spot once held by Paul Roma. I'm not a Mongo fan but it wasn't because I didn't understand why Ric brought him in characterwise.

Mongo was just 20 years too late, reputation-wose. If he were a football player turned wrestler in the 60s or 70s, he'd be one of those guys you'd hear old guys wistfully spin tales about how tough he was and what a promo he was. Probably did better money-wise, though.
