Two perfectly cut trailers which feel like perfect microdoses of their films:

And

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ml2Ae2SIXac

e: Also, not a great film per se, but the trailer is just so well cut I've watched it more times than I care to admit:

This movie is whatever but I remember seeing this trailer in a theatre and the song (Timo Maas's 'Slip In Electro Kid') that comes in at 0:47 sounded incredible.

Bonus points for them showing Nite Owl yelling when Dr. Manhattan kills Rorschach, then cutting to Dr. Manhattan killing a Vietnamese soldier the same way he kills Rorschach.

(Trailer was better than the movie.)

I know this is standard for most trailers, but having seen the extended cuts so many times now, it's amazing to me how many shots in that teaser, released way in advance, didn't make it into the theatrical cuts. (Specifically the army marching at the start, which was just a test shot, I think, and then Merry pledging himself to Theoden, which is in the extended cut, but not the actual release)

gently caress I love those movies to this day. Shame about The Hobbit films.

What's the biggest quality drop from teaser/trailer to final film? Suicide Squad? Though that kind of feels like it shouldn't count because the trailer affected the final film so much.

I remember reading the story of why this happened and it was basically "there hasn't been a Batman movie in 8 years and we don't know what way will best get people into the theaters" combined with the usual different ads for different TV channels mean that they were just throwing whatever someone could make hoping people would come

:psyduck: Thanks for making me feel like a grandma. I was like 20 back then when the first one came out.

I just remember going to the movies to watch Fellowship of the Ring over and over and over again, until the last day of screening in which the film quality and sound had degraded from being shown so many times. I had never been so obsessed with a movie.

Of course by the time of Return of the King I was dating some idiot that ended up hating that I was a cinephile. So I just went once. :smith:

I was in 5th grade when Fellowship of the Ring came out. My best friend and I were super obsessed with Legolas. We weren’t really familiar with LOTR but we were the biggest Orlando Bloom fangirls ever. Good times. I should rewatch them at some point, it’s been at least a decade since I’ve seen them. I think I’ll stick to the weird and ugly animated version of The Hobbit though, I loved that one when I was a kid.

This trailer is so perfect for prequels
Starts with the phrase "our communications disruption can only mean one thing"
Instead of stunning moneyshots (of which there are plenty in Menace) shows random bits of ships landing
Somehow the line delivery is even more stilted than in the movie
Wilhelm Scream
John Williams does all the heavy lifting

And yet how you can not mark out and lose poo poo at jedis fighting!

I was in grad school during the LOTR trilogy - or at least the end of it. Two of my colleagues left to go work at Weta on it! (one went on to do even more such as cofounding mudbox and doing all the Kong facial animation stuff for those movies - the other came back and is a brilliant illustrator here).

I remember the catharsis at the end of ROTK. I mean what a goddamned journey. I never had read the books or really knew too much about it other than The Hobbit (I've since read them), so I was just like dropped into the middle of this epic filmmaking. Kinda felt like our Star Wars in a way (in terms of big cultural and LONG cinematic events).

Still the best making-ofs and extended editions to this day. So so so so SO much good poo poo in there.
