I have a 335is (DCT) and have been considering a cover from BMS or the one you linked... but I am still in the process of swapping the M3 rear end (2.56 -> 3.15 ratio) and custom driveshaft in the car. Can't convince myself to spend close to a grand on these covers until the car is running again; this work started in DECEMBER... HOWEVER I am very interested in hearing feedback about the cover!

Honestly I can't imagine owning a car with that grille on it. If I were in the market for a sedan I'd get a gently used M340i in a year or two when people start trading em in for the new M3

Your project sounds far more fun than anything I've got going on. A bit of an eye opener, the 2.56 gearing and all, although seems appropriate given the low-end torque output of the N55. What are you expecting for changes to daily driving? RPM @ 60MPH now vs. 3.15? That ratio jump is sizable, I'd expect you'll be far more inclined toward smoke shows. Get back in the garage! Something that makes the Slon cover stand out is the inclusion of a pick-up spacer which accommodates that additional internal depth. I'm debating about picking up an SSP filter to throw in while draining the fluid to install the cover. Still waiting on the loc-tite liquid gasket any way. The F8X is still too young to have found any real appreciation, heck E9X is only just ticking up for some configurations, but when it does, to what extent? Or do we see something different? Next-gen M3/4 is similar power plant, with new tech, different packaging/styling, but ultimately it's iPhone X --> 11. What will be the next I-4 --> I-6, or I-6 --> V8 moment?

Until the M3 goes back to having an actual unique engine, it’s not going to have that kind of impact. The next M3’s engine debuted first in a drat SUV. Every generation loses something that made previous ones great. Some people care, some don’t. Personally, I stopped caring around the time the V8 and hydraulic steering went away. Everything is just too drat fast now. Excuse me I have some youths to yell at.

That ratio jump is sizable, I'd expect you'll be far more inclined toward smoke shows. Get back in the garage! Very true... I'd love to stick with 2.56 but the ultimate goal is M3 GTS software on the TCU. There were efforts in 2018 that I was a part of (on SpoolStreet forums) to convince the non-M DCT to change programming modes. This first entailed the GWS (interior shifter) along with VO changes but the community realized that the TCU has a lookup table for shift points based on final drive. Long story short, the 3.15 is the easiest way to hit the TCU's desired range, but a 10% variance is also allowed via an 8 series R&P to achieve 2.81.... Will see how bad it is on my N54 but the car is now a weekend car as the i3 is my DD... The smoke show is certainly on my mind as well as any long range cruising that has to be done. I found a way to fix this in the future via https://diffsonline.com/bmw-e9x-m3-dct-transmission-differentials.html but the project needs to work before dumping more cash (same reason I am waiting to pull trigger on DCT upgrades). This car is also getting rebuilt Ohlins from 3DM. [Edit] Forgot to include a teaser video that the big brain OG poster came up with... IT RIPS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDN5ZgKqVUw Awesome to know about the Slon! The extra fluid certainly comes in handy for maintaining temps. I think you posted about the group-buy previously? I am curious about installation and how the filling procedure goes. It looks like a bear. How are your clutches handling life? Any desire to go with Dodson or similar clutchpack upgrades? jink fucked around with this message at 03:47 on Jul 11, 2020 |

Basically an Accord except it also has RWD, a nicer interior, and is considerably faster. The numb steering is more than made up for by the fact that it’s at 90k miles with nothing broken and still feels almost new. But yeah when it finally goes I’m going to let the mask drop and replace it with a Prius or CUV or something. Got a Miata for when I want to feel the road I’m driving on.

Residency Evil posted:I get the impression that driving enthusiasts have moved on from buying new BMWs. At least with the non-M cars, I think so. The regular 3-series is a lot less of a sporty driver's car than it used to be, and a lot larger. It's still sharper and faster than most other comfortable, practical 4-door daily drivers so it still has that going for it, but it's a low bar. BMW sells a shitload of them though, I doubt they are lamenting the loss of the handful of purists. But also I think, as usual, the most vocal internet enthusiasts aren't the ones buying new cars of any kind.

And I think a lot of the traditional enthusiasts as we think of them are buying other stuff or used stuff, or other used stuff. I don’t regret moving to the G90 four years ago when I had a 100 mile each way freeway commute, and I absolutely don’t regret coming back into the F90 now that I drive once a week for maximum smileage. How is the new 2GC selling anyways? I would guess we all unilaterally hate it here, but its probably selling to the target audience...

I'm sure I'll end up with an E92 or E46 M3 at some point as well of course but the F80 is a really good DD. I just wish I'd been able to wait another year to buy as the prices have absolutely cratered on the early model years as they go out of warranty.
