reminds me of going to concerts like that in my hometown with my christian friends. i'm not actually religious and marx was right that it's the opiate of the masses, understood as a social phenomenon, an expression of suffering and a protest against it, but ultimately an illusion. also different from the new atheists (themselves acting like "fundamentalists" who spoke in moralizing terms about religion being "evil") and considered themselves so smart they needed a larger fedora to fit their giant, galaxy brain inside. and it'd take a particularly iron-willed atheist not to feel the high. i remember going into church with my friends on sunday morning feeling all groggy, and then WHAM you get hit with this massive light and sound show like U2 or something and people  WORSHIP then you leave and go outside and things seem brighter and the leaves on the trees seem shimmier. it wears off. but it's like what a friend of niels bohr asked him about why he kept the horseshoe above his door (which apparently warded off bad luck or something like that). like, c'mon niels, you don't really believe in that stuff do you? and bohr replied, no, but i'm told that it works even if you don't believe in it.

Instrumentally they use a good amount of echo effects. Vocally using a lot of high clean voice. It replicates the feel of a church and a choir really well. Midwestern emo higher guitars sounds are perfect for praising god. Drums are pushed back and more use to accent or propel the music instead of creating a rhythm. Just endless easy to sing along songs to. Making a ring of performers is cool because this it forces the audiences to focus on person person and makes a quicker connection. Instead of darting around from band member to member. Also the ring makes the audience reflect back at itself like a mirror pumping itself up. At the end of the day there are so many band members that you can just switch them in and out if need be, and nobody would care.
