Someone in the reboot thread requested a photo thread, and since I've just finished redoing the travel photo section of my website I thought I'd take the initiative and start one. The purpose of this thread is simple: share awesome photos you've taken of the outdoors! Mountains, forests, cool animals... all fair game! I'll kick things off with some of my favorites: Sgòr Gaoith, Cairngorms National Park, Scotland Poison dart frog, Cuyabeno Wildlife Preserve, Ecuador Cuyabeno Wildlife Preserve at dusk, Ecuador Cerro FitzRoy, El Chalten, Argentina Nahuel Huapi National Park, Argentina Spectral Tarsier, Tangkoko National Park, Indonesia Los Frailes Bay, Baja California, Mexico Picos de Europa National Park, Spain Neist Point lighthouse, Isle of Skye, Scotland Grinnell glacier, Glacier National Park, MT Wind River mountains near Pinedale, WY Prince Edward Island National Park Puffin, Westfjords, Iceland [timg]https://i.imgur.com/J4YJ7tN.[b]jpg[/timg] Fundy National Park, New Brunswick Oakland Martini fucked around with this message at 15:26 on Jul 20, 2020 |

This past January, we went to Yosemite and Death Valley On top of Nevada Falls, Yosemite It had rained not too long before we got to Death Valley, so there was about two inches of water at Badwater Basin. Last summer we went to Yellowstone, Glacier, and Great Basin Grand Canyon of Yellowstone The weather wasn't great the first week of June, but Glacier is very pretty. Inside Lehman Caves at Great Basin Wheeler Peak at Great Basin. Road was closed so couldn't get too high up.

I've been going riding lately and looking for things to shoot. I usually go around sunset, so I've been messing with light: Still trying to figure out landscape, these are two I liked: I prefer subject photography, and there are lots of subjects outdoors.

Every January I like to overnight on Rabbit Peak or Villager Peak, which are on the southern end of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument, just west of Salton Sea. These are from going to Villager in 2019.

These are some of the forest trails behind the house I am living this summer. I want a weighted vest like Goku to walk the very steep hills. I've been lost and had to climb down very slowly and carefully as to not slide and skid. (i am in west Montana for a few month gig]

I live in Okinawa right now, and it's kinda pretty. I have a couple of fairly regular 1-2 hour walks I like to do, which frequently devolve into just wandering along the shore tidepooling.

We live in Vancouver. It's quite pretty out here. A tiny patch of urban forest ten minutes' walk from our house: Lake Lilloet, about three hours' drive away. This was the view from our campsite. Woods on Salt Spring Island: Viewpoint on Salt Spring Island: A rare piece of Garry Oak meadow, with a sad-looking Garry Oak (on Salt Spring Island):

I did a 21 mile walk in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park today, and took some pictures. I really didn't get anything spectacular, because I was more focused on doing that long of a hike in 90+ degree weather, but since I did take a few, I thought I'd post them. Early morning view of the Valley from a ridge: [timg]https://i.imgur.com/b0uieQ2.jpeg[[/timg] I think my lens was foggy? Some pine trees near a river: Just a pretty trail. It was very very hot at this point: No idea why I took this photo. It was hot, I was confused and still am. And a couple cool looking mushrooms I stumbled upon:

I've basically started over with photography since middle of last year. I went back to a "real" camera, and at the same time I started shooting with cheap manual-everything lenses. It's been challenging, but I'm learning. This is the White Rim in Canyonlands, taken from the Green River Overlook. Of all the photos I took on this trip, I did the least walking for this one (there's a parking lot right behind me; I mention this because I hate when people try to fake being in remote places and I know from experience that they're about 20 steps from their car). Here's another from the same trip that I might not have walked for, but I definitely worked for. Pre-dawn in the Utahn desert, in February, is usually below freezing. I had to haul my carcass out of a toasty sleeping bag, walk up the ridgeline that was keeping the wind off our tent, and stand there taking pictures with freezing fingers while the ravens did a piss poor job of keeping me company.
