I hate that The Burly Brawl ended up looking so bad but at the same time... it's The Matrix - they swung for the fences and missed sometimes. Gotta respect it a little.

I don’t think it’s merely that it looks bad on a technical level, but that was also when the choreography started veering in a different direction. The first film was full of fight choreography that mostly felt grounded (an arbitrary notion, I recognize). But with Neo becoming Superman, the choreography necessarily had to become a lot more over the top and anime-ish (him spinning on the staff and kicking people in a circle or whatever is the example I’m thinking of. Even if it looked realistic it would’ve looked silly.

Not that I think it provides any great insight, but Patrick Willem did an interesting video on restructuring the Matrix sequels to make them function better while maintaining as much of their original intent as possible:

It'd probably be easy to tear some of his ideas apart, but it's certainly an interesting thought exercise. Certainly made me think about some elements of those flicks a bit differently.

It's the curse of having a big FX shot become the key imagery associated with the film. Now the expectation is that you can and you will top it.

Meanwhile, you're Lana and Lilly, sitting there, having taken what you'd initially sketched out as a trilogy and had compressed into one movie because you figured the movie wouldn't ever hit the point of getting a sequel greenlit (let alone two), and you're going "well now we gotta figure out where you go from becoming God, and come up with something cooler than bullet-time. At least they're paying us eight figures each for it."

It's because the two Matrix sequels were produced under the fake title The Burly Man.

I think it’s just another example of the maxim that even geniuses work better under constraints rather than having free reign.

I rewatched the sequels recently (essentially a first viewing for how long ago it was that I first saw them). Not much stuck with me except that absolutely egregious cake/orgasm thing. And the Architect’s big scene is unforgivably abstruse.

Looks good. Also love how Jennifer Jason Leigh has embraced this sort of 4 horsemen style character (see Annihilation) she knocks that poo poo out of the park.

The Burly Brawl is especially weird is you coulda made it look just as cool using only face replacement there was no reason to go full CGI.

Also the terrible shot from above the trailer puts a damper on the highway chase.

I really like the first...two minutes?... of it, where you just have a bunch of Weaving lookalikes and some pretty nifty choreo, plus the music loving owns.

Once Neo gets there bo staff it just goes off the rails, aside from that one cool little kick bounce thing he does with it.

That's kind of the point, and it owns actually. Did you expect the creator of the Matrix (the digital false reality that represents real-life invisible systems of control and oppression up to and including a male-WASP-dominated patriarchy that represses freedom of identity) to speak in plain terms?

Jewmanji

No that’s fine but he speaks like his lines were written by an undergrad with a thesaurus. It’s possible to speak in an inscrutable way that is nevertheless captivating, but that wasn’t it

It’s also dramatically questionable to have the climax of your movie be a conversation that doesn’t make any sense as you’re listening to it.

Definitely more of what I was hoping for compared to the first. Still looks like they're leaning way too hard on nostalgia, but with this film that doesn't feel like much of a bad thing. Don't love the production design, but whatever.

I will get high and watch that movie at home.

Yeah, I'm in. They're not doing much to hide that the daughters are going to be the ones that write "The Song". "Song created by Preston and Logan" can either be a song written by the daughters, or the daughters themselves. And after Kevin Smith saw the movie, and said that he's glad he got to make Jay and Silent Bob Reboot before this came out, not because it's the same movie, but because they hit some of the same themes, yeah, that's totally what it's going to be about. That being said, that's a totally great way to take the movie, so I'm on board.
