It's kinda crazy that Bart getting expelled is the A-plot and Whacking Day doesn't even come up til halfway through the episode. Not sure if that's unusual even by golden age Simpsons standards. Also, Marge and Homer having a very active sex life is casually implied.

Funny thing is this basically sums up a lot of popular propertes; being unafraid to be serious and relatable and also has crazy fun poo poo going on all the time. Metal Gear's popularity definitely owes credit at least partially to that; a big part of why it resonates is that it's not afraid to acknowledge it's a video game, both design-wise and in actual dialogue. To the point where it could be credited to inspiring games like Undertale that mess with the set dressing to make a point.

Whacking Day is a weird one, in that the B-Plot really does take over the episode almost completely by the end and doesn't really dovetail with Bart's story beyond a really weak (and dark) "Bart proved he actually can learn when he gets the targeted nurturing he needs... which will now be taken away so he can go back to being neglected in public school."
