I think it was poorly timed in that that issue came out around when the Women in Refrigerators discourse was really picking up steam, and it was increasingly widely agreed that Kyle Rayner's girlfriend in a fridge was the nadir of sexist comics writing. I personally think Blackest Night sucks all over, though. It's like a tawdry splatter sexploitation film, but with an ending where the zombies are defeated by a new Power Rangers toy.

Like I get that the imagery of violence against women can get really fetishized and disenfranchising, on the other hand it's a cosmic horror story about zombies that feed off heroes' emotions and also, it's really not like Green Lantern v3 Issue 54 is some grand text that needs to be protected against...I dunno, relentless lampooning. I also tend to give it a pass 'cuz that whole arc -- the whole event really, but specifically the GLC arc -- was about all the Lanterns facing their deceased loved ones with plenty of morbid imagery and gallows humor all around so it's not like Alex was singled out to be the butt of some joke.

I always remember the thing where the Violet Lantern showed Soranik and Kyle their true loves and Soranik sees Kyle and Kyle is like "Uh, yeah, I saw you too!" and it actually turns turns out it was Jade. Good job, Rayner.

Remember the space gremlins and how they had given all of Green Lantern's earth based villains their powers and came back to experiment more and upgraded a couple? I do wonder what Johns thought he was doing with that.

The absurd lengths Johns went to in order to make sure no one thought Hal was a bad guy anymore were really funny at the time because it always gave it this mad, desperate feeling of a guy trying to cover up a crime and made me think Hal was more guilty than ever.

I know he's not that old, did he just luck into reading them as a kid or something?

See also: him writing in as a fan to suggest that maybe Lex Luthor was the origin of Superboy's human half, getting politely shut down, and then making it canon when he got to write the books.

Maybe, but he took over Avengers from Busiek and wrote it for 2 years, then Austen had a short run then Bendis blew it the gently caress up and then rebuilt it by finally putting Marvel's two most popular characters on it. It's really weird to remember how little most people, even comics people used to care about Iron-Man and Captain America.

Everyone remembers the vaginal spelunking sequence from Geoff Johns's brief run on the Avengers, but people don't talk enough about DELL RUSK, the second (of three times so far) that high ranking Nazi and German national Johann Schmidt aka the Red Skull manages to attain or control a cabinet level position in the United States Government. He "forged a paper trail" but no one has ever met him prior to his Senate hearings, where he wore a skin mask so no one would know his face was a Red Skull. But just to be a stinker, he used the name Dell Rusk, which is an anagram for Red Skull. With such an impressive resume he got confirmed as Secretary of Defense, and then Dell Rusk diverted all money from AIDS research to spend years secretly forcing the CDC to develop a super flesh eating virus that would only kill black people. But I guess "because deep down we're all the same" you can't make a bioweapon to kill only black people, so it would kill everyone. Then Red Skull tricked his AIM contractors into accidentally releasing it from the secret base under Mount Rushmore and killing a bunch of people, with the plan that as Secretary of Defense he'd "track down" the AIM terrorists to their "home country" Wakanda and order a nuclear strike on evil terrorist Wakanda and everyone would love Dell Rusk's bravery and leadership that he would get elected President so he could depopulate all of Africa. But instead Falcon and Henry Gyrich spied on him using birds and tape recorders so he shot them and revealed himself as the Red Skull, but still thought maybe he could run for President until Falcon had him swarmed by angry birds and Black Panther punched his jaw off (with his bare fists, so Red Skull would know it was black skin that maimed/killed him.) Then Black Panther cut up Red Skull and took his blood, which had the only cure for the bioweapon, and I guess shot all the dying Avengers full of it and then chemtrailed Red Skull blood over the whole country so no one else would die. Then President Bush apologized to the Avengers and appointed Carol Danvers head of Homeland Security and Henry Gyrich his chief of staff to make sure I guess the Red Skull doesn't some back as Les Durkl. And then none of this is mentioned again because the following issue opens up with vaginal spelunking, and everyone just kind of moves on.
