The whole point of fantasy strike was being a super simple and easy to get into fighting game to appeal to fighting game newbies, so you could play with your friends or whatever. The biggest problem with it imo was that you needed to get your friend to buy it too before they could play against you. It should hopefully be a lot more popular now. Every multiplayer-only indie game should have a mode where you can play with 2 people using only one key, so you can buy it and force your friends to play with you. edit: holy gently caress David Sirlin is a moron the free version of the game DOESN'T ALLOW JOINING GAMES WITH YOUR FRIENDS, it only has random online matchmaking RPATDO_LAMD fucked around with this message at 22:06 on Jul 21, 2020 |

You say that but their shift to F2P seems to have gone full blown idiotic monetization scheme so I'm not actually sure you can play multiplayer with a friend without forking over money. Edit: Yup. This very technically counts, but with the release of the newest patch in August, the free trial of Final Fantasy XIV will include the entirety of the base game and the first expansion with no time limit.

The base game content used to be a bit long in tooth, but the new patch is also coming with tweaks to it that should shorten and improve the experience, and the first expansion is real dang good.

I've tried to get into FF14 a couple times but just found it to be too slow. I'd just be falling asleep while playing. I bought the expansions but never ended up getting high enough level to do them. All in all I've sunk at least $200+ into that game and my highest level character was like 35-40 or something. I'd consider trying it again if you could play the base game without subscribing.

I'd consider trying it again if you could play the base game without subscribing. it is a pretty slow start, pre-50 is like a very extended tutorial with a handful of fun fights sprinkled in. a lot of old content is intended to be steamrolled through in a way that's easy but consistent enough that you figure out how your job works and how to play it better on the way to endgame.
