Mask Chat: it's about 50/50 round here (E Finchley) across the age spectrum. Supermarket staff don't seem to bother at all now, going from 'as much PPE as they can' to 'gently caress it whatever'. The Budgens has a big sign up already saying 'DO NOT ENTER UNLESS WEARING MASK PLEASE', and the woman in front of me contemplated this by blocking the entrance with her old lady trolley, until a mother/daughter team just walked straight in past with no masks. I can't see them enforcing it come Friday due to all the ballache security/staff'll get off Karens & Dickheads if Twitter's anything to go by in the last week or so.

Also, fun phonecalls off Letting Agents:
'Are you still on UC?'
'Yes, you know this by the screenshots of money we've been receiving I've e-mailed you each month, and the previous phonecalls'
(goes into ramble about how it's terrible and we're not monsters etc) then 'but they just walk into the country and get it all handed to them don't they?'
'I didn't understand that last bit, what?'
(repeats)
'Who do and what are you talking about?'
'Oh...er, ignore that. Are you paying any rent?'
'You know I'm paying 50%, as per previous'
'I'll call next week, you'll have to pay that back gradually as well'

Which I knew was coming at some point, but wasn't expecting casual racist shite thrown in too. Ironic, given the lass calling me & the owner are Greek, & the other guy who works there is Eastern European.
Expecting a massive rent hike come contract renewal in October too, which I'm going to argue against unless they can prove the actual owners mortgage has gone up. 'Inline with market increases' isn't acceptable reasoning.
And I'm intent on paying owed rent back, I'm just not in any position to for the forseeable future because gently caress knows when my work will pick back up again.

Rent strike rent strike rent strike rent strike.

Join your local renter's union, organise a rent strike. Don't pay the back rent.

I certainly wouldn't be intent on paying rent, it's something you do because you have to, property owners don't need or deserve it.

Had this just before the brexit referendum. The owner of our local Thai restaurant, who has previously mentioned growing up in Thailand (in conversations about how spicy a green curry should be), bemoaned how we needed to stop 'them' flooding in and taking jobs off 'us.' In her takeaway restaurant that replaced a chippy that used to be there.

It confused the gently caress out of the gammon sat there reading the Mail, anyway.

Theres got to be an established way to describe liberals who are completely down for wars and war crimes but if you call them out on it they'll just straight up say you're a supporter of the regime they're targeting and all of their crimes. Because thats what Oz does, every day of his empty life.

There might be a clever twist at the end but from a casual autoplay it definitely seems to be endorsing conservatism. Not only that but there's a sneaky shot of saying 'we can't look back' over a shot of a 5 pointed star hanging in a window.

This might be me being dense but I don't get that at all from the video? It explicitly says Labour is edging towards Conservatism and needs to adopt socialist policies. The rest of all very non-specific but abolishing student loans and putting controls on rent don't seem like endorsements of conservatism.

He drew huge crowds, making big inroads into the base of Hillary’s supporters. She defeated Bill for the Democratic nomination and then Jebb Bush for the Presidency, having been helped by the endorsement of Donald Trump! Her majority in Congress was sufficient for her to get through progressive legislation on citizenship for undocumented immigrants, climate change, and some gun control.

Right, with audio I've clearly got the wrong end of the stick. However, when you watch it on silent, it gives the impression that it's boris talking, and the following parts of the speech make it seem like Labour supporting austerity was a good thing.

It's a very mixed message on autoplay which is how I suspect it'll be absorbed by a lot of people. Seems like a bit of a shot in the foot, but probably just me being a bit dumb.

Never mind, carry on.

I mean it literally says in text and voice on the screen "labour can not be more conservative than the conservatives" so I really don't get how you got that impression.

Me too. My only blockings are by people I've never interacted with. Even the dreaded Akehurst. I can only assume it's because he has blocked everyone who follows Jewdas or Jewish Voice for Labour.

If someone shares a tweet which I can see I'm blocked from and I want to see it, I simply sign in using an account that is completely unrelated to politics and is 100% scientist or science organisation follows (and fight my fingers not to reply to it until I go back to my hip-shooting account.)

Ed: actually I've recently realized that I can see the tweets without signing in at all in most cases. It didn't used to be like that.

That's a slightly odd take given that as leftists we presumably understand that the individual players don't matter, it is a conflict of systems created in response to other systems.

The leading lights of the right are fools, but it doesn't matter because they are fools on the end of a long and heavy stick made of the structure of capitalism. Doesn't matter what's on the end, if someone hits you with the stick it will still hurt.

a few of us have said for some time that he is likely sponsored by some kind of turkish intelligence/PR outfit or gulf PR agency/ think tank. when you look at his career it makes no sense. claims to have gone to vice after being a dubstep producer for a time but nobody has any evidence he was part of the scene. he was actually a cub gossip reporter at the lebanon star, then moved to vice to write articles about taking viagra and asking girls if they'd gently caress ed sheeran. a year later he's suddenly an activist journo and some suspect he ghost wrote part of vices anonymous "syria issue" special. flits in and out of syria at a time when turkeys proxies had their largest territorial control, most of the "rebel groups" he raised cash for and sent aid to were affiliates of al qaeda and turk backed. there is loads more but its interesting how he had to beg the daily mail for a job around the time turkey made a pivot away from PR funding and the white helmets guy "committed suicide".

my hunch is he was sponsored by someone tk be like the young hip face of regime change the way molly crabapple was in the states, but he turned out to be too dumb and loud whereas she is clever and at least has some kind of talent. idk, its fun to speculate about. bloodworth is another one i see a lot of people call MI5.

I really, strongly want to stress that you shouldn't. It wasn't your fault, nor was it a fault of your ideas or your understanding of politics or anything else. It was entirely out of your hands. Our enemies are not clever, not individually, any more than say, to be topical, coronavirus is clever. They are simply facets and products of an evolutionary process which produces things which maximise profit to the wealthy in the immediate moment. If that process requires fools in charge, it will put them in charge, if it requires fools in the press, it will put them there. The invisible hand of the market is real but it doesn't create a good society like it's advertised as doing, it just destroys things.

Change, if it happens, happens when it can't not happen, and we still aren't there yet. We won't be until enough of society can not abide the status quo, and that's very generationally weighted at the moment. And sadly all of the cathartic methods of proactive demographic adjustment are illegal. So we might be waiting for them to die of natural causes. More's the pity.

I wonder if there's some sort of version of the weird yudkowski nerds except we're going to build the robot afterlife specifically to put boomers in it.
