I was under the impression that burn barrels are actually a pretty crappy way to destroy documents compared to good-quality shredders (might not burn everything, unburned pieces might waft away on updrafts, etc)....unless you need to get rid of a lot of stuff in a hurry, for some reason. Edit: there's rumors they're being "evicted" in a few days but no idea how or why, since I would assume that would be quite a diplomatic incident if true.

Yeah, consulates have intelligence people but mostly it's just bureaucrats handling passports and visas. Wuhan means all the consulates are coastal except Chengdu now, so that's a pain in the rear end.

I mean, there's always a chance. But there's no particular reason to think it's moments from collapse right now. There's no source for that which isn't weird, but if it were happening we wouldn't know because there's no media in China that could report on it. I don't know where the rumor started but I'm going to guess inside someone's rear end in a top hat.

i'm sure the dam is hosed up somehow given what a bad idea it was in the first place but i doubt anybody not actually working on the thing knows for sure; certainly anybody who talks with confidence about when it will fall down doesn't know what they're talking about

If they thought the dam was going to collapse, could they not start letting the water out even if it meant widespread but gradual flooding downstream? Came into the thread because I stumbled upon this rumour, and it basically sounds like the worst thing in the history of civilisation if this were to happen.

kaesarsosei posted:If they thought the dam was going to collapse, could they not start letting the water out even if it meant widespread but gradual flooding downstream? They have been letting water out as the water level is very, very high. The question is whether they can let enough water out fast enough. There has seemingly also been some deformation of one of the dams, but it remains to be seen how bad it actually is. Warbadger fucked around with this message at 18:29 on Jul 22, 2020 |

kaesarsosei posted:If they thought the dam was going to collapse, could they not start letting the water out even if it meant widespread but gradual flooding downstream? Warning: Not a professional damnologist engineer scientist expert You can see what happened to the California Oroville Dam. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oroville_Dam_crisis Basically Dams have normal ways to let water through (to generate power in this case) and also other gates and openings. Then they also have 'Oh poo poo' options like emergency spillways and other things to just dump water over the side. However a few things can happen 1) The 'Oh poo poo' options are infrequently used and don't always work right 2) The pressure of water flowing through the drat can be so high that it starts to erode and tear pieces of the drat off or gently caress up the surrounding soil 1 and 2 are basically what happened in Oroville. 3) The water flow is so great that even with all the extra stuff open the water either cracks the drat or starts flowing over it and tearing it apart.

I saw an article saying the dam was 15 metres from overflowing. To be honest, given the size of the dam, that seems pretty safe to me.

The Dam started exhibiting surface cracking almost immediately after it was built but concerns were dismissed that it was expected and planned for in the design. Those cracks have gotten visibly worse over time but again, same dismissal. Will the Dam fail? Probably one day. Is it a fools errand to predict when? Also probably. The thing is, without thorough survey of the drat by a team of independent engineers, it's not really possible to say one way or the other what state it's in and it's such a huge status project for the CCP, the results of any such survey would almost certainly be kept entirely within the party. I personally think rumors have gotten started up again recently because of all the rain that China has been getting hit by lately and it is just making people nervous.

Probably worth mentioning that there was some sensationalist bullshit a couple months ago about how the dam was showing "severe warping" in Google's satellite images. Example: I checked it out on Google Maps myself at the time and sure enough, that's the imagery that Google had. It was pretty obviously just a bad set of photos (probably warped by vibrations on the camera), not an actual case of a large dam going full Tim Burton. If you look at the dam on Gmaps now, it's completely straight. That's not to say the dam is currently safe. All experts whose opinions aren't obviously compromised by the CCP seem to agree that it's at huge risk of failure.
