OP get a Dell P2415Q it’s a matte 24in 4K (2160p) display for around $400 and it just works yeah it’s plastic-cased and made by Dell but it’s still a calibrated upper-bin IPS panel, it works great

I can't believe anyone is capable of mustering up enough cognitive dissonance over their current monitor/video card to look at 4K monitors and go "actually that's TOO MANY pixels" I have a 1440p Dell S2718D which has enough stupid compromises (built-in stand, only two inputs, one of which is USB-C and has zero backwards-compatibility with anything) that I can't really recommend it, but it's pretty and I got it on super clearance

I was listening to a podcast with the guy in charge of R&D for the UK ATC system and there was a fun bit about how they've got a cool system that allows them to squeeze a few more percentage out of Heathrow's capacity but they aren't allowed to use it yet because it wasn't designed for a square screen

Got two 4k Dell Monitors at work and ho-ho-holy poo poo they're terrible 30fps max, even on displayport Latency is so awful it's only tolerable when switching to gaming mode If you look at them from more than zero degrees from the center the picture is poo poo Panel is dim Colors are mute The one on my right randomly flickers to black for a few seconds every so often

sounds like your video card can’t drive 4K at 60hz or you’re using the wrong cable

Clark Nova posted:sounds like your video card can’t drive 4K at 60hz or you’re using the wrong cable I thought it was the video too until we moved from 6th gen Intel integrated graphics desktops to laptops running Quadro P1000s. Realized the latency wasn't the computer when switching it to "gaming mode" removed the worst of the problem. The monitors actually can't do 60Hz on DisplayPort, a prompt shows up to complain that it doesn't support the refresh rate if you let it output at 60. Inherited them from my boss, I suspect they were 1st gen 4k displays or something, where literally every other aspect of the monitor was compromised so they could push out a pile of doo with "4k" on the box.

You can get a Displayport to HDMI 2 active adapter, but most of the rest of your complaints make it sound like they're really lovely TN panels and one of them might be dying so just throw them in the trash

# ? Jul 27, 2020 05:34 |

it could also be one of those weird MST ones that requires two cables because its really just two panels stitched together but yeah u probably just need the active adapter and/or a better cable

i mean we have a bunch of 4k tvs being used as monitors in one of the VR labs and for the longest time they were running at 30hz because the school bought the wrong cables and it seemed that i was the only person who noticed. apparently not everyone is bothered by lovely refresh rates. i don't doubt that there are 1mph mousing, two-finger typing geezers out there who can't tell the difference between 30 and 60hz because they never do anything fast enough to see it.
