This is even more suspect, because it implies that they had the support of *someone* in administration at the hotel. It wouldn't surprise me if the check-in/out system cuts off the phones to rooms that aren't in use so people (namely the housekeeping staff) couldn't use the phones to call whomever they wanted on company time. If they were in 'deactivated' rooms, someone definitely knew and played along.

(or the Gestapo unplugged the phones)

Yup, I spent a year of lovely car commuting just slamming through that and it was big help. Check out Revolutions if you haven't. Now's a good time since its on a long break while he finishes up another book.

Also, if you liked History of Rome I have really been enjoying Robin Pierson's History of Byzantium. He starts out with a very unapologetic "We all loved Duncan's History of Rome so I am taking that exact format and just running with the story of the eastern empire where Duncan left it off". Duncan has more or less endorsed the show and they've done some interviews together etc.

Over time he gets a bit more of his own style and I think it comes off pretty well. He's just now up to the 1st Crusade which has been really interesting. I didn't know how little I actually knew about what was going on with the initial Crusade(s) at all like while they were going to Antioch etc the Byzantines were making deals with the other Muslims to stay cool so the crusaders could knock out the upstart Turks on the Byzantines behalf etc.

yeah, I tried like ep1 of revolutions back when it started and it didn't grab me, but, maybe I'll revisit it. I wasn't aware of Pierson's series -- that sounds VERY interesting, will give it a shot.

Definitely give Pierson's a couple eps. I think he's pretty good but he definitely was closer to well... where Duncan was when he started which was ok but not super polished.

Yeah I've had Pierson in my queue for a while and just hadn't been able to get into it. Kept starting and then realizing 2 episodes in that I had tuned it all out and couldn't remember anything. Guess I'll give it another go.

I didn't realize that Revolutions was by the same guy as History of Rome, which I loved. I've already got a huge backlog building up now that I hardly drive anywhere and this isn't going to help :v:

Try starting with the French Revolution - I bounced off the Glorious Revolution as well, but the French Revolution starts at 'super drat interesting' and the narrative only gets more and more compelling as the ball begins rolling.

Ooo! Look at me! NO DON'T LOOK AT ME!

Another well fitting podcast is Patrick Wyman's "The Fall of Rome" basically doing the same for the western empire as the other does for byzantium, covering and looking at systemic crashes and events for the west from 300 AD to 5-600 and then does a long epilogue and analysis of both east and west.
And then that ties in to the follow on series "tides of history" looking at peasant life, how the plague changed everything immediately afterwards and how the european middle ages worked, and then turks conquering byzantium. Duncan has done a couple interviews with him too, and a very very good one a couple months ago.
It was about the measurable systemic inequalities affecting millenials and zoomers - because boomers are who they are - and the dangers now staring back at us. Grapes of wrath yea?

Duncan thinks this is most like 1848 more than 1789-95 or anything else really. But who knows? Where there's a will there's a way :D

it's not a bad strategy. there's a disturbing number of people who have been driven by the same pictures and videos we're all seeing to side with cops and troops more. this includes self-described liberals. plenty of campaign consultants have publicly shared the established wisdom of their profession that republicans win when issues of "security" are at the forefront of people's minds.

So these riots are literally dems(inequality fighters) vs Republicans (work to increase security) so we should expect to see lots of ads playing up those sides of the protests?

Taste the High Country

quote:

Just before noon Saturday, police officers in Marshall, Minn., were called to the town’s Walmart on a report that two shoppers were wearing masks emblazoned with swastikas.

Another shopper, Raphaela Mueller, the vicar of a southwest Minnesota parish, filmed the swastika-wearing man and woman as they were confronted by others in the store. Then she posted the video on Facebook, where it went viral.

“If you vote for Biden, you’re going to be living in Nazi Germany,” the woman with the swastika mask told Mueller, as her companion bagged up toilet paper and an enormous canister of cheeseballs. The two were apparently using the masks to protest Minnesota’s mask mandate, which took effect Saturday.
