I had turned on Steam Audio hoping that it would be better but poo poo like this happened all the time. It's weird, you want to be able to trust the game's audio and of course there's a chance that I'm just dogshit at the game but it happened way too many times. Switched back to normal audio and haven't been having nearly as many issues.

It's just something I'll have to get used to and I'll have to try to rely on my (poor) vision more than sound. The only FPS I really spent a ton of time on (300 hours and I'm still trash) is Hunt Showdown which has an amazing sound system. I know Tarkov is in Beta and such and I just need to get used to the finer points, but I've also seen game footage on YouTube where someone was totally blindsided by another player moving up silently (and not sneaking, just walking or running without sound).

This has been my experience. There are a few dead spots on the maps (such as the weather station on Shoreline) where audio doesn’t seem to reach at all, but I’ve learned to avoid them or work around it. Some walls or floors will block sound completely. Outside I don’t have any issues.

In most fights, it’s been very helpful

I don't bother turning up my sound loud anymore because its so unreliable. I can't count the number of times I was holed up somewhere and a guy was able to run up to me and the first audio I get was gunshots. Could be the shoddy net code too i suppose. Its 2020 and peekers advantage is still a thing.

So I decided to upgrade my game edition and also figured I'd start fresh and reset my level 20 character and I somehow ended up with double of every item that comes with the upgraded editions. My stash had everything + my Gamma was on my character, but then I also had the in-game system message that also had all of the same items in it, including a second Gamma case. All of my traders started out at 0.4 reputation as well instead of 0.2. Other than not having access to the flea market, I literally ended up better off than I was before I reset.

There's normal peeker's advantage, and then there's Tarkov peeker's advantage where the guy is around the corner and past me shooting me in the side and the four shots I managed to get off before my screen goes black didn't even register with the server because I was technically dead before I even saw him. One can be fixed if it's not coded by someone who just discovered encrypted packets are a thing in 2020.

Edit: VVV I know you're joking but I didn't say hits, I said shots.

peeker's advantage is simply the advantage via network latency equal to the peeker's ping to the server.

inconsistent latency, or lagswitching, can exacerbate this issue significantly (ie, spiking to 450 ping while you peek, and shooting the guy in the head as soon as the lag stops, which shows on his side as you peeking/(teleporting across his screen) and instakilling him )

I wasn't trying to start a derail or declare one game as superior, I'm just getting used to the differences in how sound works in Tarkov. I don't think these two games on the whole can really be compared to each other as they are totally different experiences. Why I chose to load into Factory with a Zabralo armor to try and get it down to 50% for that stupid Ragman quest instead of just doing what most people do and get a buddy to shoot it down to 50% and then do insurance fraud. I hate Factory, I suck at Factory but thought hey might as well try it. This was also after a x5 attempt in Factory to get that stupid 25m mosin kill Jaeger quest (managed to get 1 kill and extract out of 5 other runs).

Literally my first time wearing level 5 armor, level 4 helmet and level 4 face shield, first time running with a decent M4 with M995 ever and of course the first PMC I run into just plucks that 700k+ loadout away in a few shots.

I am really genuinely curious what the devs concept of "main storyline" quests are going to be if their conception of this quests are dumb trick shot crap.

I just f5'd flea for like 5-10 minutes for the Zabralo quest. Just remember than any combo of remaining AP or max AP counts as long as one is under 1/2.

New player: spend some time in offline raids and scav raids learning the layout of Customs and Interchange, and a little bit of time (like a fast run-though of each) for Factory and Woods. Your initial group of goals should be to get Flea Market access, get a scav junkbox to help out with hideout space, and get your basic hideout upgrades going so you can craft stuff for quests and for profit on the side. Join the Discord and group up with goons to get help on lovely early quests.

For equipment there's a great barter trade of 2-3 soap and 4? toilet paper to Ragman for a level 4 armored rig. It doesn't repair for poo poo, but it's accessible early and its level 4. Green WWII helmet can last you forever, just use it. Once you get Ragman LL2 the level 4 6B3 armored rig is your best bet for a long time (until you can consistently afford L5) - it's cheap and repairs well and comes back a lot.

Early on the 7.62x39 VEPRs are nice to use - you can get PS ammo from Prapor which isn't incredible but does the job, and you'll always get them back. I'd just get used to iron sights, they aren't too bad and you don't need a ton of range on maps like Customs and Interchange. Grab AKM variants too, cause you can still just use PS and it's better than most alternatives. If you like spraying more then try to save up good 5.45 ammo (BS/BT basically) and try out AK-74s. VEPR Hunters are great, too, but mags and ammo are going to be hard to get for a while, and will be pretty expensive on the flea.

edit: also worth spending some time learning a loot run on a map - Shoreline and Interchange are both very good stash maps, and Reserve can be good for learning loose loot spawn routes

Once I'm in a position to buy my own rifles and not scavenge for guns, I love the SKS series for cheapness. It's good to learn how to manage a small semiauto magazine. Iron sights can be rough but not unbearable.

Plus, loading up from a pocket stash of bullets is really handy for loot runs

ak-47u, sks and mosin from prapor are the rifles youll look to use early game, which one is up to you. the ak comes with a full mag of good ammo but you cant buy more easily other than buying another ak and removing the mag, but it gives you 30 shots without reloading, you can tap with it or go full auto close range. sks you can use PS ammo which isnt the best but is servicable, 10 rounds semi auto. mosin you can run good ammo with but its 5 rounds bolt action.
lots of people think the mosin is best early because it can pen player armor better, but the rifle costs twice as much as the other two and the problem is if you dont one tap someone you just die most of the time if the other guy is geared enough that you need the pen. the other thing is that early on you probably want to be avoiding players, learning how to avoid combat situations you cant win is something important to learn and theres plenty of other stuff you need to do early that isnt directly running into pvp. i think running the ww2 helmet and the paca armor from ragman with an sks is a really nice early loadout for running around popping scavs and getting loot and tasks done and learning the map. and if you do get into a fight its perfectly fine, and you can at least unload 10 rounds at whoever it is in a blind panic.

also theres nothing wrong with saving money and running around with a pistol (make sure you take a bag and rig) or an smg. itll let you take out scavs still and make early deaths sting less while youre still learning. just dont expect to kill players without aiming for the face and praying.

The SKS is definitely the best option unless you have something that you can mount a scope on. It's not expensive, you don't need to bring in truckloads of ammo, and it'll put people in the ground.

Is there a good guide to show you all the way to mount scopes to guns pre-level 15? I realised you can buy the front end at level 1 for the AKM which lets you put several scopes on it

edit; also, absolutely broken way to level right now is to 5 stack factory! You get no loot but walk out with between 2-3.5k XP each for <10 minutes work shootin' and lootin' scavs.

SKS iron sights blow and other than a slightly higher MOA the 7.62x39 VEPR is better in every way. It'll cost somewhat more to buy it from Skier vs the SKS (30ish k vs 23k for the SKS) but you will get it back 95% of the time, and having 30 round mags and better iron sights is totally worth. It also shares AK mods so it's easier to screw around with than the SKS. It's also a common gun on scavs, so keeping them on hand shouldn't be too difficult.

edit: whoops, just looked and it's Skier LL2 which sucks. But they're still easy to find on scavs, once you have 3-4 you'll be able to get them back in insurance and be pretty good to go.

my takeaway from early game is to wear at least the world war ii helmet and some body armor because even if a player will ace you, it'll still protect you from scavs which is pretty valuable. also don't skimp on your meds because tanking hits with your body armor means you're injured instead of dead, and walking around with untreated injuries really loving sucks. oh yeah and if you're not so broke that you literally can't afford it, insure as much of your stuff as possible because it's always cheaper to insure than to rebuy, and you'll be surprised how much stuff you get back, even stuff you'd think is considered fairly desirable

the main reason I like SKS is for doing gear runs, where I pop on a PACA and peen-helm, and kill some scavs to get a rig and backpack. it's pretty nice in early game.

and I'm a weirdo who loves the op sks with a promag so I keep using it past that.

lmao these new ammo types

with 85 thorax HP mosin man may need to run 7n1, but they can also just start running the significantly cheaper VPO-215, because .366 AP is 90 damage, 42 pen (or the VPO-209 which is now basically a hunter with nastier ammo and 30 round magazines, though it's worth noting that it has horrible recoil before the ammo's penalties and modding it only has a modest impact)

9x19 7n31 is 52 damage, 39 pen, which likely makes all the fun SMGs significantly more viable (but only 90 rounds per prapor reset so probably unfortunately hard to affordably run consistently, though supposedly rashala uses it so maybe enough will be farmed in raid)

9x19 QuakeMaker is 85 damage, 8 pen so slots in between luger and RIP, but hits one-tap thorax damage level and is about half the price of Luger CCI from PK2, so unless they change it it seems likely to be quite popular early wipe (and still a fine choice for leg-meta gimmicks)

.45 AP is 70 damage, 36 pen which will of course be great the moment they add a .45 platform that doesn't suck rear end (makes the 1911 usable if you need to rep :911: but still inferior to the Five-seveN/SR1MP due to its much higher recoil/smaller mag size)

m993 is 67 damage, 70 pen so basically just more m61 (with what appears to be a higher accuracy bonus and softer recoil penalty)

not afaik, unless you're talking about the -20% damage stims?

which are indeed nuts, but are only going to really affect a handful of low damage/high pen rounds that generally already relied on volume of fire and were already occasionally iffy vs. high-level head armor anyway, so I'd wait to see how that plays out (though I can definitely see people popping a lot of P22 and Meldonin regularly)

also the new tube is quite strong and is going to switch up some builds, making the m1a the even more obviously superior 7.62x51 semi option (can get it to 37 recoil) and shaving a bit more recoil off the FAL (which can now get down to 63)
