When I was a kid in the 90s and we went skiing, they'd throw us onto a chair lift and send us up the mountain.

Someone didn't do their S turns to make sure the runway was clear.

This was at the Reno Air Races, and that class starts with all the racers on the runway, instead of forming up in the air and starting there.

The pilot in the video had an engine problem, and raising his canopy was supposed to be a signal to the marshals to cancel the start, but the marshals didn't see the signal and continued the start.

I actually saw that happen, and since the very next race had two airplanes collide on the runway, and previous days had one of the jet class forced to land in the desert and one of the sport class airplanes get a cockpit full of smoke (both pilots were unharmed) it was a pretty expensive weekend for some people.

Radio too much weight for a little race plane?

I believe the rules require the airplanes to carry radios, but it's possible that a visual signal on the runway is considered safer than a radio call that could get stepped on or drowned out by other noise.

even modern ski lifts are like this because the safety bar is optional.

first time I went skiing and got on one but wasn't buckled in like I was on an amusement ride I was stunned and thrilled to learn there were still such frontier esque places and things to do in the world.

Skiing itself is definitely a thing where, growing up in the 80s and 90s and thinking everything was orwellian, was a surprise at how much you can take your own life into your hands. It rules

I've tried hand planting rice before and oh god it is amazing how quickly your back starts to hurt. This does legit look like a more OSHA version of hand planting.

Hey busted tor buddy, I wore steel toes for my last job and never had a foot issue for years and then managed to break my pinky toe on a bed post. It really hurt for like a day but healed pretty quickly, bout three weeks until I was back to 100%. Getting it set hurt way more than you'd think it would, but thankfully it's an easy fix.

QFT: I even had steelies in my casual shoes (trainers/Timberland-style boots) for ages because they were very reassuring to wear, yet I have constantly bashed the poo poo out of my little toes in my own house, which is supposed to be a safe place.
