Good God, I thought I was on my way to a nice redemption arc and then I found my car lmao

Is it best to min/max? I picked one of the preset characters, 1/5/4/2 I think, and I feel like I should keep dumping my points into the skills I've already built up.

Mix/Maxing only affects the very beginning of the game significantly, and even then its mostly inconsequential. There are not too many skill checks that require a high skill number either except for a couple of motorics checks, which are optional. It's better to have two fours and two twos I think.

I just beat this game for the first time last week. It was tremendous. I've never played or read anything like it. I'm left with so many what-if's about it.

I got so engrossed by it in a way i didn't think i ever would be. I was glued to the screen reading every weird piece of text. It was the beginning when i had a conversation with a trash compactor, and then it lied to me, that i knew i was all in for this ride.

I love the opening sequence about waking up from a hangover. I loved how your thoughts lie to you and how they can foreshadow things. I really liked how many things tied together by the end of the game. I started off not taking it seriously but by the end of the game I was really into solving the case and proving to Kim that i wasnt a complete fuckup.

I started a replay and i think the game loses a lot on replay value because i can just click thru text super quickly. I dont really have the will to re-read something at the same pace i did the first time. I guess that's on me.

I'll come back and ask more questions later. I am having fun finding the surprises of an alternate route right now.

Ha, I never noticed Measure Head's babe had Measurehead's portrait just dominating the back half. Wonder if that's because her position is always in front of Measurehead or because Measurehead dominates her thoughts. Such a detailed oriented game, drat. :allears:

Which, in her portrait, seems to indicate that she's a Moralist at heart (the white) and Measurehead is the main communist influence on her (the red) but his race ideology is actually making her kind of a nationalist/fascist (the yellow-orange highlights). In contrast, Measurehead's portrait has a moderate amount of red but a kind of dull green-olive dominates. I kind of feel like green in portrait backgrounds is something like "self-interested," you see it on Korty, Rene, and faintly on a few other folks.

That would explain why Measurehead's portrait is such a mess of colours. He's an absolute mess of ideals and compromises, and his ideology makes no sense since he's trying to reconcile himself being a racial supremacist working under a socialist union while being a child of immigrants far away from his declared homeland.

I love the writing in this game, but both times I've tried to get into it I've suffered a game-ending morale loss. And since the game's so stingy with auto-saves, I lose ~30-60 minutes. It totally kills the drama for me. Any tips? Should I be saving before every red check?

The game is pretty generous with healing items, you don't have to keep yourself at the brink of death.
Also even if you only have 1 Morale / 1 Health based on your character build, I believe you have several seconds after you hit 0 when you can still click on the healing item to save yourself.

i do agree that the autosaves could happen more frequently. i never found myself close to dying after making it an hour in. the game throws healing items at you if you're looking at everything closely.

You know that you can heal yourself after a failed check, even mid-conversation, even if you run out of Health/Morale right (provided you have healing items of course)?

This is nicked from a really good set of observations upthread on the various portrait backgrounds, but Evart shares the bifurcated red and white backgrounds shared by all members of the union (as seen in the measurehead portrait) except instead of white on top of red, Evart's is reversed, with the red on top of white.

This can be indicative of a bunch of things, from Evart's postion at the top of the union food chain, to his subversion of its social democratic beliefs to his own ends. Even the red itself looks like an unevenly painted cover that's peeling to reveal his cynical/Ultraliberal beliefs

Also noted is how Evart's own presence crowds out his union affiliation; his personality dominates the organisation.

wait a minute. are those evrart's irises visible behind his glasses? somehow in-game I had always parsed the glasses as reflective and not revealing his eyes behind them.

I ask because, uh, isn't edgar the one with the lazy eye, not evrart? :tinfoil:

Edgar Claire, the brother with the lazy-eye, is claimed to "the smart one" of the two. The brothers supposedly rotate between being the union boss in order to circumvent term limits, but in reality it's always Edgar. Evrart Claire is off doing something in another country during the events of Disco Elysium, under the guise of being Edgar.

I figured this out second time I tried the game, yeah.

I like games that don't hold my hand but the punishment for dying here isn't "replay the tricky bits" as in Cuphead or Dark Souls, but "read all the text again." It's just an odd design choice imo, especially when the rest of the game is so shockingly fresh and good.

I kind of agree with you, but it wouldn’t have quite captured that Torment magic for me without a few needlessly obtuse UI elements.

Also, Harry immediately dying while trying to retrieve his tie would not have been nearly so loving funny if I didn’t have to replay the whole intro afterwards.

I think it's fair to say that the actual, for want of a better word, gameplay in this game is mediocre at best. there's not much to 'master' in terms of how the skills, thought cabinet, and your choice of clothing interact. heck, the clothing system should, if you ask me, be reworked heavily if not discarded entirely. it's really silly to talk to someone, see a check, tell them "ok talk to you later," take off your cloak and put on a robe so you're better at doing drugs or whatever, and then go "hey I'm back!" inside of twenty seconds. but happily, the gameplay systems hardly even matter, because they exist only to deliver Harry And Kim's Excellent Adventure.

anyway, F5 is quicksave and F9 is quickload. don't fall to the temptation of savescumming on your first go, but you don't have to rely on autosaves.

Yellow and yellow-orange is usually nationalism or fascism but I think it's broadly applied as "in-group tribalism." It shows up on Rene's outfit and of course on the Suzerainty flag, which is seen both in Garry's room and his portrait and means Revachol uber alles for both of them. That doesn't fit very well for Cindy the Skull but I think the yellow represents her gang allegiance. I think the portraits are all intentional but the system isn't "symmetrical," in that color is more important in some images while patterns, contrasting elements, and facial expressions are more important in others. I think the Pawn Shop guy is all yellowy because he's hopped up on drugs & looking at the soothing lights inside his shop, not because he's a nationalist. On the other hand you get the Man From Hjelmdall shirt there & that's clearly signaled as being For Reactionaries.

Evrart's portrait is fuckin brilliant -- I love what JustaDamnFool said about how the red is "peeling" but I was rather thinking it's a red that was quickly/hastily painted on, echoing how outside of Evart's office you've got Leonard painting on all the Wild Pines containers. I think that Evrart is sincerely not "in it" for profit, which is a concept tied to liberalism, and he's really in it for his own community. For Martinaise. He doesn't care about workers all over the world, he cares about the workers who live on his street. It's a bright deep red color because he's committed, but the fascist elements of his ideology can be seen in how he thinks he knows what's better for the people who live on the beach. Probably my favorite part of Evrart's portrait is how the yellow part also looks like a fire with smoke coming out of it -- the revolution! -- which he positions himself as the public face in front of. To the people of Martinaise, the player represents civil authority, and others who have gone to speak with Evrart represent the forces of capital. Evrart interposes himself between these state/corporate authorities and the communards, so that the revolution can occur in his backyard.
