I used to spend $1200-$1300 on mid-tier laptops with decent specs -- dedicated graphics, even. My last laptop buy? A used Surface Book I picked up from a local pawn shop for $300. And it's not so much a laptop as it is a tablet with a glorified keyboard dock that happens to be good at laptop stuff.

If you're just surfing the internet or using Office, a low-end laptop will cover 90% of your needs. And while on-board graphics used to suck something fierce, the latest stuff can handle light to moderate gaming, too.

Only reason to get a high-end laptop that isn't a Macbook is if you're an EXTREME GAMER in need of something portable or you need something for work that can handle Solidworks/3DS Max/Blender. Or if you need something rugged like a Toughbook.

Why would you pay the luxury tax on a Macbook while receiving an inferior product?

My current car I took the drastic length of buying a complete dash of the newer version (2008 to 2010 upgrade). That way I had an infotainment system, could still have AC controls and USB/Bluetooth. This cost $2000 in OEM parts and then VIN flashing the new stereo, reflashing the HVAC to have the new firmware, then resistors to fake the thermocouples it expected values from. Oh and an adaptor loom. It is incredibly janky but works completely 100% with steering wheel controls etc.

After installation I turned bluetooth on on my phone and discovered that the car had bluetooth on a separate module all this time and would jack into the AUX feed on the original stereo...

Now that car is about to be retired, and I'm buying the newer version of the same thing.... Maybe I'll fart around with an android solution on the old car for kicks.

Right now I'm figuring out how to add Bluetooth to my current car -- a 2001 with a semi-primitive nav system. I'd like a larger touchscreen, too, but installing an AliExpress special means ditching the auxiliary climate/radio controls and I'm not keen on running everything through the touchscreen. I still want my physical buttons.

Seriously, the nav interface in this car is hilariously sluggish and wonky and the maps are hopelessly outdated. Waze beats it hands down.

It's not a laptop, but the mini-ITX board in my DIY NAS has a passively cooled 10w TDP Atom-based Celeron and takes SO-DIMM memory, so it's basically laptop hardware. The onboard GPU can do four simultaneous 4K transcodes at better than realtime speed without bogging down, and it's 2018-spec hardware. It's crazy.

I kinda lied about buying a newer version... I'm eyeing off a Jap R35 Skyline with a separate popup nav screen which looks nifty as all gently caress. I've been reading up on screen mirroring from my phone.... I'm almost going to buy the drat car JUST to gently caress with it.

All I did to add a nav system to my car was buy a mount and holder from https://www.proclipusa.com/ took about 5 minutes to install

I bought a Bluetooth module there that my car thinks is the optional CD changer. The physical buttons like track skip work, and even auto switches source if you get a call.

I also have a proclip mount to go with it.

Remember, every single person who uses an Apple laptop is an idiot who makes decisions based only on brands.

That's why I bought an Asus Republic of Gamers laptop with the extra RGB upgrade, and a Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra! Sure, they might cost a bit more, but this way everyone will know I'm a true nerd and not some vaguely gay-coded hipster stereotype. Wouldn't want people to laugh at me for thinking about using an Apple product!

Now with less breakage.

I do sort of miss the period when you could replace the CD drive with another battery or disk, all the memory was socketed, and you could even swap the CPU if you felt optimistic.

On the other hand, I've never really felt the need to upgrade anything on my current laptop except the storage - and that's about the only thing that's still socketed, so fair enough.

I had a laptop with PCMCIA and ExpressCard slots! Too bad I didn't have anything to take advantage of the latter.

Can't find anything like that today. Most laptops have ditched optical media in the neverending pursuit of thinness.

The closest thing to that feeling today is probably thunderbolt over USB-C. I haven't made any use of it, but having multiple lanes of PCI-E in a convenient external port is kind of cool.

The idea of being able to plug a gaming GPU into a USB port and actually getting good performance is the sort of thing that would sound like a joke not too long ago - and you even get multiple slots in the eGPU boxes, so I could stuff a 10GBe card and a SAS controller in there and run a fileserver off an ultrabook if I were feeling silly.

Hello Commandos
I got an iphone because my cyborg hearing aids work better with Apple stuff, and also my car has carplay or whatever it's called which is nice as well
I miss my Samsung Note but not enough to care, I also don't really like / dislike this iphone, as I can listen to Spotify directly conducted to my cochlea which is pretty slick and shout at my car which is awesome.
It's the brain music and shouting at a car which is cool, not what badge the device has on it.

My Thinkpad X220i has been upgraded from 4 to 8GB RAM and from a 320GB HDD to a 500GB SSD. It has had the crappy 2.4GHz WLAN card replaced with a fancy dual-band card and the extra antenna added to make proper use of it. It has an ExpressCard slot, so I put a USB 3.0 card in there just because I could.

I don't think there's much more I can easily upgrade, putting a full HD IPS panel in it is a bit more complicated, but certainly possible.
