when they filmed the "you have my sword" bit in fellowship, they had to leave out Gandalf joining with "and my staff" because McKellen refused to film it without whipping out his foot long hog, insisting that it was true to character and Gandalf would have named it his "staff"

Most of my friends know they should pick up if they see I’m calling, because if I’m actually making a phone call it is a dire emergency. Possibly the apocalypse.

I have not answered a phone in years.

E: I'm realizing I'd probably screw it up. I'd forget that it's common to say 'hello' and I'd just say "yeah?" or something. It would be a foreign experience to me like eating lobster or programming a VCR or sex.

E2 I kid of course. I can program a VCR.

Answering the phone with "Who are you and what do you want?" leads to some long pauses as their bran processes that you didn't say "Hello" but it gets results.

Too wordy.
E: I like not saying anything. Just silence until they speak first to see if anyone is on the line. It's how I show dominance. TBF they're always wrong numbers. No one calls me.
E2: "On the line" is obsolete. There should be an Obsolete Phrases thread.
E3: Yes I used the wrong "they're" I don;t care

Funny thing is that's actually an obscure joke about how old Mr Burns is; Alexander Graham Bell intended that to be the standard phone greeting.

It was View Halloo which I think Edison misheard something over the phone as halloo and figured it would work better than ahoy. A few years later the women who were working as switch board operators were Called Hello-Girls.
