I think it's risky to do. You're going to have to nail the aesthetic in the rest of the place, or it's going to just look like bad 80's decor for people with bad taste

It's like having an olive green bathroom with gold wallpaper. You could do it, but it's going to be a hell of a lot harder to make it look correct in 2020, and not like some lovely forgotten bathroom

from the picture exactly as-is, if I'm just imagining wood paneled walls, I'm thinking "desperately dated design", not "cool 80's ~retro aesthetic~"

overall, I'd just shop it to get an idea

I have these counter tops that I need to recaulk. What color caulk would be best? The previous owners used clear, but it looks hazy. Would black caulk work?

Also, for some reason, there are little flecks of dried white paint EVERYWHERE. What is the best way to remove them? I can scrape them off with my fingernails but there has to be a better way.

Formica countertops are pretty soft. A windshield ice scraper "might" work without marring or scratching. I always went with clear silicone, not caulk.

here's a sample of a rug I'm interested in against a color that's incredibly close to my floor. I feel like it might not stand out enough since you have black, and then most of the tones are similar to the floor. But maybe not, what do you think?

Black would work.

Denatured alcohol is about as mild of a solvent as you can get that loosens/dissolves dried latex paint. I'd go with the windshield scraper to get the majority, and use the alcohol to clean up the rest

I’ve done work in houses of people that host a lot of functions (social calls/political fundraisers/etc.) and I would guess a few of those were in the double digit bathroom count since they designed their space with that in mind. Small hallway with 4 off the entryway, another hallway just inside from the patio, etc.

As someone who had to remove two layers of wallpaper with a steamer, it’s a pain in the rear end. It’s messy, they drip hot water and get hot steam all over you. How big is this room?

Other options are to rip and replace the drywall (lol), put 1/4 drywall over top of it or get a talented guy to skimcoat the wall and forget about it.

It's the master bathroom so not a whole lot of open space. There's a small area over a bathtub, over the shower (this will be a pain in the rear end), then around the counter top.

It does seem to be ripping off fairly easily. I'm just worried I'll damage what's underneath it.

As long as it’s not ripping off the drywall paper, you should be okay. I had a section where they didn’t prime the wall and it all just needed to be replaced.

Wallpaper steamer. If you damage the drywall you need to reskim it, if you don't, you don't. You just have to crack on and see.

Anyone know a good non-cheesy gaslamp-simulating bulb? I have an old brass electric lamp outside my front door, and I don’t really feel like running gas to it to have a gaslamp right now. Maybe later, but in the meantime I’d like something that emulates a flickering gas flame well enough.

The ones I picked up at Home Depot are too orange and the pattern isn’t believable.

Your house was unquestionably designed with this in mind

But I'm guessing you want sleek, yuppie 80's rather than pastel floral nightmare. So you need to look for post-modern items, preferably really matchy and lightly colored ones. Post-modernism is about criticism of modernism, largely through de-contextualization. Design-wise it's a lot of mixing high and low, bringing traditional forms into modern settings often through simplification and deconstruction. Lots of textual and pop art elements, and lots of matching.

For the living room lean towards the idea of traditional items in modern contexts, so one of those fake-distressed Persian rugs in a light color would fit. This one that looks like scraps sewn together in a light yellow would work. Or this modernist take on a Persian rug in brown.

If you swap out the rug, then you might not necessarily need to change the picture of the mantel. But if you want to, again, look for something post-modern- black and white photos of buildings, collages, stuff with a lot of text. Fill the giant space over the couch with a triptych or a wall hanging that compliments what you have over the mantel.

As for you nerd cave, the meshing of pop culture items and advertisement with art is super post-modern, so just lean into it. Find some actual art that's Star Wars or video game related for the empty spot. It's not exactly 80's, but I think a Lichenstien-esque piece would be pretty cool.
