I’ll have to see if I can find it, I want to say it came up during a piece on an official Mega Man PC port review.

Dangerous Dave in Copyright Infringement was I believe the first (or at least one of the first) time someone managed to crack that, and eventually became Commander Keen IIRC.

It wasn't my cup of tea but I can't hate on anyone having fun with it but it definitely wasn't Doom. I guess a part of me is thankful we never got Carmack's Doom 4 because it sounded way worse than nuDoom and Eternal. It's certainly a bummer knowing we'll never get a proper modern Doom.

I don't know what happened in that particular situation, but Pain Elementals are somewhat easy to game once you know what their behavior is (I'm assuming that this is your first game experience with them, no custom WADs).

The first thing is that they won't shoot their souls if they can't see you, instead opting to advance. If they're far away, find cover and let them come close to you. If you don't have cover in the room you're in, retreat back through a door

Second thing is that if they don't have room to spawn their souls, the souls will just pop. This doesn't work in Brutal Doom (I think? Never played) or Doom 64, but if you jam right up against a Pain Elemental they'll have no room to spawn the Lost Soul and will keep firing to no effect. You can even shut down their death burst which spawns 3 this way by running into their space as they die.

If you can't get to them, take cover then jam into their face when they come to you. If you can run right for them, jam into their face and pop them before turning your attention to other enemies (assuming you don't need to prioritize those other enemies first for whatever reason).

No cover, no retreat, and no way to jam into their face? Haul out the chaingun and tap the fire button. As long as you don't hold down fire, it'll stay accurate and interrupt their attempts to spawn Lost Souls.

I suggest the Super Shotgun for close and personal, though the Plasma Gun also works. While the chaingun works for long-range sniping, you need them dead fast if you also have other enemies to contend with.

The chainsaw is ideal for killing lone pain elementals: the way the weapon "bites" into its victim and continually pushes you towards them gives you just enough momentum to get right in the spawn spot when the PE stops being solid.

I wasn't allowed consoles as a kid, so Croc is the 3D platformer of my childhood. Although, I originally got the GBC version while my friend had the PC version, and at some point we let each other borrow the other version to see how they were different and somehow that became permanent. No consoles is also why Commander Keen is my childhood 2D platformer.

Anyway, I tried moving to Quakespasm-spiked from Quakespasm (particles are the thing I missed most moving from Darkplaces), and I replaced all the QS files with QS-S, but when I try to start a new game it brings up the console, with no errors, and won't actually launch anything. The last thing in the console is about demo files, and that's from startup. Am I missing something obvious? Anyone else had issues with getting it running?

Does pressing ESC bring up the menu? What about typing "map start" into the console?

Brief detour about Croc and Mario 64 -

I replayed mario 64 a year or so ago and was struck by how few challenges in the game are actually timed. Its like they knew that navigating in a 3d space was imperfect at best (although Mario 64, camera notwithstanding, has better controls than 90% of titles from that).

There's a massive mario 64 modding community and they do spectacular things. But they're all full of absolutely demonic platform replacement or ludicrously timed wall kicks.

Like I appreciate the effort, but its pretty clear the series was never meant to get that challenging. The mechanics simply don't hold up.

Quake was a traumatic event within id where two different games were awkwardly jammed together and rushed out the door after years of wrestling with the tech and bad internal politics, and everyone was a little surprised that it was as big a hit as it was. As time rolled on, I don't think id really knew what to do with it. The main contributor to VkQuake works for id, and I'd like to think that's a bellwether of future plans. But after a quarter of a century, all we've gotten is a couple of mission packs, MachineGames's "fifth episode" from a few years back, and the grab bag of multiplayer-only fun that is Quake III Arena and its sequels. I'm not holding my breath.

Esc does bring up the menu, and "map start" does load up the start map and it does allow me to go into the episodes. It appears that it's the "new game" option that's not working.

Zombies always have a chance to pop back up, unless killed by fire or explosives. You can dispatch zombies fairly easy with the pitchfork, you just need to dance with them for a bit. They're slow enough that you should prioritise them last for most encounters, if you can't spare the TNT.

I'll admit I don't have much love for Blood but the sound design is probably the best of that era. If I were ranking sound effects in FPS games:

2. Cultists breaking their fake-latin shtick to scream IT BURNS IT BURNS
3. Zombie AAAAUUUGH
4. Mancubus' cute MRRRRREOW
5. All the headcrab noises
6. Halo Elite's getting frustrated like a Twitch streamer playing CoD
7. Deus Ex enemy poisoned "uh huh uh huh GOD drat uh huh uh *death gurgle*"

9. Disciple of D'Sparil's backwards chanting

Secondary fire with both barrels at close range will nearly always kill one. I wouldn't use a single shotgun blast unless you're dealing with a bunch of enemies at once and need to buy yourself a little time, and that's never the best option. Flares and TNT are the best lower-level options for zombies; the big guns are usually a waste of harder to find ammo unless you're taking out a bunch at once. The Pitchfork Poke is fine for individual zombies once you've gotten the hang of darting forward and back and timing your attacks.
