This is probably intended to clear out stock of old models, and possibly to test the waters for future blind reveal products.

It could also be an attempt to dig into the third party guys who are doing random boxes now.

It would be pretty easy for GW to make a lot of money doing proper blind reveal models at a premium price. It would also be a good entry into more mainstream retail for them.

Should be get a "random" army at a huge discount :) to spread diversity in the wh40k universe. Yes I would pay 150 bucks for a 2000 point GSC army with multiple units.

Careful with your wording. You might inadvertently summon Arch.

On topic, the idea is neat, but not the price they're asking kind of neat.
It tugs at me, only because my Eldar are done (i'm just bringing them up to modern day replacing old models with the newer versions). I have a small force of Chaos Cultists because I got into Blackstone a few months back; and I have what was a small Deathwing force I had started before I quit back in 5th edition; it's usable, but I have no desire to flesh the army out. I want something else for my other army.

I'm thinking Knights (probably Imperial, just because of easy and quickness of painting vs. Chaos) because they're are pure lol factor to me and are just straight up "don't give a gently caress, let's just kill little model mans". But then we circle back on price. because holy poo poo. I might just proxy my 12" Dragonzoid collectible.

I like the idea of doing some sort of mini crate, but then again I was on the loot crate drug for a few years before I kicked that. Granted I'm in the US so I can't get one anyway, but it would be nice if it would include a little idea of what was in the crate. I know that defeats the idea of it being a random crate, but even if it was something like, "The Imperium crate will contain one HQ and two troop units from the following factions, Astartes, Guard, Sisters of Battle, Ad Mech" just so you knew at least the type of or number of units to expect.

If they follow the concept as it's adopted by every other type of "loot box", there's just too much randomness to it and I'm too lazy to deal with off loading sets of stuff I don't want or need. The theme idea is what I'll be watching because Terrain is one that I would most likely dive into.

I'm pretty much jumping the gun on this without ever seeing the first runs contents.

While I like the idea of getting some cheap sprues, the price point is way above the impulse price threshold for me vs. the risk of getting utter junk.

And remember the rule of every random loot crate: if it was really worth what they're claiming, they would have sold it for that normally

Privateer Press started doing this quite successfully a few years back. Warmachine/Hordes has an even worse problem that 40k does with bloated army rosters. That is, even armies which are powerful have many unit options that have little reason for existing under current rules, which means they're terrible on the table top, and consequently no one save for completionists buys them. So they gathered up multiple units from those armies, and sold them as themed mystery boxes.

It's a good way to clear excess inventory without suffering the brand damage associated with a firesale. It's also pretty useless in terms of fielding an even decent army as a result.

To be fair, fielding a decent army at this point in time is pretty drat hard anyhow, considering how much of GW's catalog is out of stock (and it's worse in the US! Why are Helbrutes available in the UK and not on this side of the pond!)

Yea so many things are out of stock on virtually every site I normally buy from. I had to resort to buying off random vendors who sell on Amazon.

Generally the prices were equally as good as the sites I normally buy, and since they were Prime eligible I even get 5% back but I really don't like giving Bezos money if I can shop elsewhere

I've heard that tyranids are popular among female players. Plus there's the potential to expand into GSC and then even Guard down the line when we get a new box with female basic troopers in 2025.

I Want To CREATE

To many, Warhammer is, at its core, about making really, really cool stuff. Think of it like owning a dollhouse, only the dollhouse is covered in skulls and you can make it fight other dollhouses.

Creating things in Warhammer takes many forms, but one of the most rewarding (and easy to learn) is painting. You probably don’t think you’re a miniatures painter. You’re probably looking at how small Warhammer is and thinking “I’d be RUBBISH at that.”

Well, guess what? You’re probably right.
That’s how we all started, but you’re not going to be rubbish for long! We’ve got hours of free painting tutorials to watch on our dedicated painting tutorial website***, and some special sets just for you. Each contains paints and a few models to test your skills on – if you’re curious to try Warhammer, this is a great way to dip your toes into the water, and in no time at all you’ll have your very own first painted miniature to show off!

The big problem with eldar is how much of the line is old resin (originally metal) sculpts. All the vehicles are fine, some older than others but all OK. Of the infantry, only the wraith units and Howling Banshees are modern. Their Troop units specifically are 2 outdated plastic kits (Guardians and Dire Avengers) of which the latter is especially poor value in £ per point, and 1 resin kit (Rangers) which I also think is fairly pants in-game.

Basically, you will be dealing with some quite outdated models unless you build a purely wraith or jetbike based list. It's not a terrible problem, building say 30 plastic Guardians isn't too bad and then you could focus on vehicles.
