It did the festival rounds in the UK back in 2017. I'm guessing it's only now seeing the light out day elsewhere because nothing's coming out for a while yet.

On paper I'd say a bad idea, but the style and almost dark-comedy-esque nature of some of it seems pretty entertaining.

The style's great but giving Nurse Ratched a complex and dramatic backstory flies directly in the face of the source material.

Then again, I don't think Netflix cares and it could be fun if Ryan Murphy just lets it descend into campy dark comedy.

With almost nothing to back it up, my mind first went to "this was originally an entirely stand-alone project that someone backed into being a Ratched origin story."

Sarah Paulson is perfect for a super passive-aggressive character and the trailer looks quite pretty. I'm extremely sick of prequels and origin stories that try to draw you in on name recognition, but I'd watch that.

Gonna groan real hard though when the last shot is someone saying "we've got a new patient coming in, his name is... McMurphy."

Why associate it with an awesome movie and character at all? Just make it a stand-alone series from the lovely AHS guy about a nurse.

I can't believe they're naming the nurse character after a black slang term. Talk about cultural appropriation.

It was pointed out in another thread that Sarah Paulson is older than Louise Fletcher was when they made One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

It's so stupid. Nobody is gonna tune in because they wanted to know the character's backstory that wouldn't have tuned in if it was an original character.

It gets more people talking about the show, more articles written about it, even if it's from a, "Why are they making a Ratched origin story?" POV, they're still talking about it, etc.

I can't tell from that trailer whether it's going to be just medical torture porn or if it's gonna try for a "Nurse Ratched was misunderstood" angle, maybe even with a touch of misplaced female empowerment?

Anyways, I've a prediction: at some point, maybe not in the first season, but at some point there's going to be at least the insinuation that The Combine is a concrete entity. Because that's what these types of adaptations always do, they'll comb through the short, standalone material for every little detail they can then expand on and over-explain it into mundanity.

It will be worth it once Ratched finally fights Master Chief as was destined.

Oh I'm definitely in.

But there's just a LOT going on in that trailer. I mean you got the sci-fi, then the jason and the argonauts skeletons, some floaty prometheus poo poo and a bunch of other stuff. Looks cool but was a visceral overload.

I thought that Wolves trailer was awful. There was some interesting imagery in there and I'm not fully writing it off, but the whole trailer was anchored by eyerolling narration and a performance that was absolutely not working for me.

Yeah seems like the typical trailer for "this show has way too much poo poo going on and every layer of approval demanded we include their favorite part". Should have just let production do their own teaser and expand in future trailers.

I.... know that. I'm not talking about her style of talking. But when she starts to tell the three little pig story it sounds like her dialogue is coming from some crappy speaker in the back of my monitor or something. It just sounds really really low fidelity compared to everything else. Like an accidental mixing error and not a stylistic choice.
