Sorry to interrupt all the porn talk, but I was wondering what deck building games this thread recommends. Obviously I’m on board with Slay the Spire and Monster Train, and I’m having such a good time with those (except when I have a lovely run on StS and scream “stupid game CHEATS” at the computer like I’m not a 30-year old man) that I was looking to branch out into some other ones! Thanks in advance!

Sorry this got lost in the shuffle. Slay the Spire is famous because it has a difficulty curve that is right in the Goldilocks zone. It has a good initial balance, and lots of ways to make the game harder when you are ready for it. So I only have recommendations that are listed in order of "how much more difficult than Slay the Spire do I perceive these games to be." Mods can also provide some extra variety inside STS.

Night of the Full Moon: A Dream Quest knockoff. Looks like a mobile game, but is a sensible streamlining of its "inspiration." Honestly a bit too easy, but this format doesn't let me put this above STS. The ascension level mechanic suffers from only drawing from a subset of the available bosses.

Monster Slayer: A Dream Quest knockoff. Unfortunately the game has too much emphasis on meta-progression. Imagine if you didn't get bash or doublecast in your starting hand until you had a game or two under your belt.

Frost: A card based survival game. Great integration of theme and mechanics. The heart of the game are the character unlock challenges, but they can get pretty tough.

Card Quest: Technically cheating, you only get the chance to radically change your deck the first time you beat a level. Carefully balance using energy on getting better cards in hand vs. playing cards. Beat the tutorial for a character before starting a campaign for that character. Think about what your current loadout is ready to take on, and choose a route accordingly. But I love it anyway, and it is free on the Humble Trove.

Dream Quest: The OG. Over-reliance on damage type immunity means the game can be very frustrating. Shout out to the druid, who relies on poison for damage in both of their forms. I swear the cards on the first level are traps to screw you up on the second level. Metaprogression moves to acceptable levels after your first 5 or so characters die horrible deaths. The final boss gives you clues on how exactly it will be nearly impossible to beat throughout the game. Mostly a historical curiosity these days, you can get most of the enjoyment by just looking up how bullshit some of the monsters get. My favourite is the Hand of Glory. It doesn't have a decent deck itself, but it makes you play your cards against yourself every other turn.

Games to avoid despite similarities: Neoverse, Blood Card

Yeah, that one stuck with me, the other ones didn’t. But it’s also only 3-4 seconds, not 10-15, it doesn’t linger longer than the other ones.

The Tomb Raider reboot animations are death. way more overdone than the RE4 animations. Like Leon gets killed pretty brutally but its fairly quick. Lara gets her throat impaled by a rusty metal pole and theres a good 10-15 seconds of her struggling to pull it out and choking and poo poo. It lingers in the moment too much.
Some of the animations were kind of extreme but they were like 1 to 3 seconds at most, not even close to 15 seconds.

Plus there's the larger disconnect of RE4 and Dead Space being horror games with impossible monsters while Tomb Raider wasn't really marketed as a horror game and is relatively grounded. And them marketing Tomb Raider as like, this woke reboot that makes Lara a stronger protagonist, and she spends the entire game either terrified or dying horribly, except for the last ten minutes.

I would disagree with that. The early game is really over the top with the QTE death segments and I hated it, but the bad guys become positively terrified of Lara around the midway point. Their reaction to her getting a machine gun in 2016 was one of the high points of the new trilogy.

Tomb Raider 2016 is in a weird place because literally all anybody ever talks about or seemingly remembers about it is the over-the-top death animations and how wildly uncomfortable they made them feel playing the game.

Hell that kind of ultrarealistic violence is wildly out-of-place in the franchise as a whole and certainly not touched upon by their main competition, the Uncharted series. (The Last of Us sure, but not Uncharted.) So I wonder who's bright idea was it to go in that direction.

TR2013's ultraviolent cold open is really only for the first couple hours of the game, at which point it becomes a much more traditional action adventure.

I have never beaten TR2013, now that I think about it. I’ve gotten to the end on multiple computers and there’s always a room right before the very end that fails to load properly and I can’t progress. Verifying the install has done nothing any time it’s happened, and it’s obviously not the install since it’s happened on five different computers over the years on 2-3 save files.

I saw a good explanation along the lines of:

There's a ton of free porn, so any kind of paid porn product these days tends to be strange and cater to obscure fetishes, things that wouldn't normally be part of your average sex life. In fictional stuff it trends even more extreme, as your audience will pay for experiences that are not possible in real life, and they'll pay a lot because the people with physically impossible out-there fetishes can literally find it nowhere else in the world.

So in the end every product will trend to weird body parts, furries, and questionable situations because there is a gold in them there (doggy dick) hills.

On this note, Skyrim may have the depth of a puddle but it has an extremely diverse modding community and honestly I'm not sure there's much ground they haven't covered by now.
