Hell, I wouldn't even attach my name to it, could do all of it under a pseudonym, and if things go south just disappear and start a new gimmick.

The mom was probably scrambling to call the police and the neighbors, which the article says she did. Typing out a lengthy reassuring text to her daughter would cut into the attention paid to those things. I'd say her curt responses are understandable given the context.
