Yeah, you know how Blackbeard used to put lit fuses in his beard to intimidate people? Lots of pirates would keep bats under their hats and let them fly out for dramatic effect. That's also the origin of the term "batter", which is what they called the clubs you'd use to get the bats out.

It's also the origin of the term 'assault and battery' because the batter was wielded by pirates, who were colloquially known as 'Salty dogs' so you were battered by a salty hence 'a salty battery' became modernised later to Assault and Battery.

Blackbeard, aka Edward Teach, was a committed educationalist as well as a sometime pirate/ privateer. He used to hold symposiums for many topics on board his ships, and prepared a lot of his men for a working life after sailing.

In fact, a lot of his teachings were passed on by those same men after they retired from the sea and they, in turn, tried to make the lot of their fellow working men better, and were often invited to give short presentations on topics they were well versed in to whatever forum interested in.

For a while, some of these learned men were called "Teachers" after the man himself, but this fell out of fashion after some of his unsavoury piratical activities became more well known. Now, of course, you can identify if your lecturer is an admirer of a scurvy ridden, drunken low life with no useful skills or knowledge when they thank you for coming to their 'Ted' talk.

In grade 2 (7-8 years old) i was in a small rural primary school with 19 kids. Grade prep to grade 6 was one room. The teacher would drink from 0900 when he started the day, and often pass out by lunchtime. The bell to go back inside after lunchtime never went off, so the grade 6 kids would just tell the rest of us when it was time to go and get the bus home.

When my brother and I were pulled out of there to take a much longer bus ride to an actual school, the locals fought tooth and nail to not have the school closed, because at the time you needed at least 18 kids to have a school. They would have all been better off if they just hosed around at home all day instead of go to that school.

This is actually almost true if you replace "horses" with "Koreans". At least South Koreans; I don't know if that's how North Koreans do it.

And it was the real site of a Mongol invasion in 1274! Though this particular Khan is made up.

The funny thing I learned recently about the game is that the haiku segments are about 400 years too soon. But the most thread relevant thing I learned is that samurai were a thing for like, 700 years. I always assumed they were part of a very specific period of time but the last ones were more recent than the American Civil War.

Obviously kidding, I'd believe it was only loosely inspired, just having the actual island was one step closer than reality to what I expected.
