Sadly "bleeding edge tech" and "magnesium based metallurgy" are dangerous phrases to mix. Every now and then the engine would suddenly run hotter than the surface of the sun for a short time as an improperly mixed piece of magnesium alloy ignited, which is generally seen as something of a terminal failure mode for the entire plane. More B-29s were lost to mechanical problems (the primary being mid-flight engine fires) than were to Japanese anti-air batteries and fighter interceptions during the bombing of Japan.
