My friends at school set fire to a pencil sharpener and it burnt through the desk. You know why? those suckas are magnesium because it's cheap as gently caress to die-cast. hence, big chunky bits of magnesium that uh, burn quite hot.

the real curse is on all of us because if the cops in the states actually had community outreach this would be a light hearted moment of cops being there in the community for people, rather than prelude to both the dancer and the cop themselves getting shot by a third, white cop, for the crime of dancing while black

Capitol: A building or complex of buildings in which any legislature meets.
Capital: A city designated as a legislative seat by the government or some other authority, often the city in which the government is located; otherwise the most important city within a country or a subdivision of it.

In WWII the B-29's engines were made with magnesium parts because not only is it easy to work with (if you don't set the thing on fire) it's incredibly lightweight for it's strength. Lighter than steel, cheaper than aluminum at the time.

It's just that engines, especially aviation engines, doubly especially military aviation engines tend to be hot machines. The Curtis-Wright R-3350 would eventually be a powerhouse engine that was put into military planes even up to Vietnam, but when they first came out in 1937 the involved some bleeding edge metallurgy tech to make an engine that was basically not only lighter but nearly twice as powerful as what most anyone else was producing. Sadly "bleeding edge tech" and "magnesium based metallurgy" are dangerous phrases to mix. Every now and then the engine would suddenly run hotter than the surface of the sun for a short time as an improperly mixed piece of magnesium alloy ignited, which is generally seen as something of a terminal failure mode for the entire plane. More B-29s were lost to mechanical problems (the primary being mid-flight engine fires) than were to Japanese anti-air batteries and fighter interceptions during the bombing of Japan.

Apologies for making GBS threads up the memes thread with factoids. Here's an article if you want to read on your own time
